We also don't know exactly what kind of ** he had, why he had it and how he got it. I think that it can be difficult to avoid it if you download stuff (e.g. image packs) from the internet because birth certificates are generally not provided. Again, we don't know the details.
I agree with you that creating real-life ** is really and totally morally wrong, but as far as I know Westy never did that.
This forum was created to be a place without censorship when it comes to computer generated graphics. By simply being a registered member here, you are accepting this and any legal consequences are yours to bear. Just like Westy bore the legal consequences of what he did. In this respect, I simply don't see the moral difference between creating computer generated graphics and watching them, although there may well be legal differences, especially when it comes to the part of premeditation.
