New Feature: Public Rank Banner Visibility Controls

I heard the community had been asking for this type of add-on, so I coded it, tested it, and pushed it live. The site downtime last night was related to getting this feature installed, tested, and working properly across the site.
We have added a new account-level visibility system for public user group banners. This gives members more control over which rank badges are shown on their public account displays, without changing their actual permissions, access, or assigned user groups.

What Changed
Previously, user group banners were mostly displayed based on the groups attached to your account. If you had multiple groups, the site could show multiple banners automatically in public areas. This worked, but it did not give members much control over how their account looked to other users.
With this update, eligible user group banners can now be toggled on or off from your account settings. If you only want to show certain ranks, you can do that. If you want a cleaner postbit or profile, you can do that too.
This is mainly a public display/privacy feature. It does not remove groups from your account and it does not change what your account can access.
Where It Applies
The visibility preference is intended to apply anywhere the site publicly renders user group banners, including postbit/user info areas, profile pages, member cards, hover cards, and other public account display locations.
In simple terms, if a banner is hidden through this setting, the site should avoid rendering that banner in public-facing areas that respect the new visibility system.
What It Does Not Do
Hiding a banner does not downgrade your account, remove your permissions, remove your benefits, or take away access from any section you already have access to. Your real user groups remain attached to your account exactly the same as before.
For example, if you hide a Donator, Premium, Members+, event, or other eligible banner, you still keep the permissions and benefits from that group. The only thing changing is whether that specific banner is displayed publicly.
Developer Notes
This feature was built as a visibility layer on top of the existing XenForo user group/banner system. Instead of modifying assigned user groups directly, the add-on stores each user’s selected visible groups as an account preference and checks that preference when public banners are rendered.
The intended logic is:
- User groups remain assigned normally.
- Permissions and access checks continue using XenForo’s normal user group system.
- The visibility setting only affects public banner rendering.
- Public display locations should check the saved visible group preference before outputting banners.
- Groups that are not eligible to be hidden can remain forced visible if needed.
This approach keeps permissions separate from presentation. That is important because rank visibility should not be tied to access control. A member hiding a banner should never accidentally lose permissions, and a permission check should never rely on whether a banner is currently visible.
Some user groups may be locked, forced visible, or excluded from hiding depending on staff/admin rules, moderation needs, or core site requirements. If a group is required to stay visible, it may not be selectable.
Why This Was Added
Not everyone wants every rank attached to their account shown everywhere. Some members like displaying every badge they have, while others prefer a cleaner profile or only want specific ranks shown publicly.
This gives members more control over their account presentation without removing any existing benefits.
How To Use It
Go to:

Select the groups you want shown publicly, then save your changes. After saving, public banner displays should follow your selected visibility settings.
Reporting Issues
Because this touches multiple public display areas, there may be places that still need to be updated to respect the new visibility setting. If you hide a banner and still see it somewhere, please report it.
When reporting an issue, include which banner was hidden, where it is still showing, and a screenshot if possible. Useful locations to mention are posts, profiles, member cards, hover cards, or any other public display area where the banner appears.
