Proud Father (Off-Topic)

The border patrol has authority to search your phone, no warrant required.

They've been refusing entry for anti-Trump posts and JD Vance memes.

Good you're searching for sources, but don't trust Google AI.
never trust any ai. they are out to get you

I live in the US and this was on the news. Several people from countries like Canada. Saying anything bad about Israel or the current president meant no getting in and even imprisonment for a time until sending them back. Some were threatened wit 10 years in prison if they didn't give their password.
Nah. Empty threats. This is waaay too common

It would be interesting to explore how many people actually got searched. According to your link, it is less than 1 in 10,000. Also, according to your link, reasons for the search are things like suspected human trafficking and terrorist activity.

So, yes, if you are suspected of committing a felony, you can lose your civil liberties. If you commit burglary or shoot someone, they will search your phone. My suggestion is not to do those things, but what do I know?

I searched for people stopped for "views on Israel" or "views on JD Vance" and could not find any examples. I found one news story of a Palestinian leader who was denied entry but that's quite a bit different.

Australia is a country where one in four have their phones searched at the border and you can go to jail for drawing naked pictures of Peppa Pig. Nothing even close to that is happening in the U.S.

yeah, heard about the peppa pig stuff. wild

Australia is up there with Saudi Arabia and N Korea at this point.

This Aussie was refused entry into America and deported back to Oz simply for writing an article about Gaza. Even saying something bad about trump on facebook is enough to get you sent back home.

It sounds like Mr Kitchen may have been flagged by customs officials due to past involvement in violent college riots. His mistake was that he admitted to prior drug use. So now that's the official reason he was sent back. He screwed himself by intentionally lying on his visa application.

Lying on Visa application will get a person kicked out of most countries. Have to wonder was he just writing about the college riots or was he actively involved in rioting. As for the weed, he is a dumb bastard, lies about drug usage on application but has evidence of it on his phone. People need to realize that when you enter another country, the first people you meet have the authority to go through everything you have.

Decent countries don't intrude into what's on peoples' phones, etc without good cause - as in a warrant.

Customs Officers are not cops, they do not need to get a warrant from a judge. If they find anything, they hand you over to the Federal police One last thing, if a dog sits next to you in an airport and starts wagging its tail, it aint being friendly

Unless you're suspected of a crime like a shooting or something like that, I can't imagine police searching your electronic devices or a court signing off on such a demand. Can you cite some sources? Has this happened to you? Do you know anyone who has experienced such a search?

I asked Google "is it legal for police to search your phone" and it said "no" and even cited Supreme Court cases. Not without a warrant. I travel a lot and have never been asked for a password in the US. It hasn't happened to me. It hasn't happened to anyone I know. To be sure, none of that proves you wrong, but I would love to see some proof. If people were being routinely stopped and forced to surrender their passwords, I would think everyone from CNN to Fox News would be talking about it.

To be clear, censorship is wrong no matter what regime is in power. It's nonpartisan. If what you say is really happening, then let's make the individuals doing it famous.
CBC.ca is the official news network of Canada.

EDIT = If the focus is about passwords, the travel advisory from the government of Canada

Search for the Electronic Devices on the page. (not quite half way down)
Quote = If you refuse, they may seize your device. The border agent could also delay your travel or deny entry if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Combining the 2 articles doesn't paint a pretty picture but it's not a smoking gun either.
Other articles talk about being detained for over 30 days.
Personally I'd pass over life saving surgery in the US rather than going through that... in the future... and possibly ever... but that's just me.

Now as far as POLICE... I'm no local. I'll defer to any local Yanks with their story... but I can't imagine cops being that much "nicer" than border agents... vs CANADA of all things.
Imagine if you're from an actually... DANGEROUS... country.

According to the U.S. Supreme Court, you have no privacy rights at the border. You are not "in" the U.S. so its laws do not apply. You can indeed be forced to turn over your phones and other electronics. Just like Australia.

"Decent" countries don't really exist, some are just more or less indecent.

U.S. Border Patrol won't turn you into the FBI for cartoon porn, unlike Naztralia. But it may get you put on a watchlist...

Keep your electronics clean when crossing borders, folks.

The US is pretty much a Fascist country these days...

I don’t know about that. It’s something else that’s not necessarily better. Too many people try to label everything fascist as if that’s the worst thing a place could be. Fascism was new when it rose to popularity.

So then lets call it pre-Fascist, because that seems to be the track that things are headed in.

Most people calling something Facist wouldn't know a real one if they were standing in front of them.

As that word has lost all meaning nowadays. Anyway this isn't a political forum so knock it off.
