Usually Male but if the male option looks particularly bad i might go to female (also if female protag is the "canonical" choice i'll consider it more heavily)

I mean, this is demonstrably false. On this site alone, female protagonist tag is only 2500, male protag is nearly 7k. On F95, fem protag is 8k, male protag is almost 19k.

Unless you mean video games in general, which I still would entirely disagree with but could understand people seeing recent trends of female protags and thinking there's more of them somehow, I guess. Female protagonists barely existed until Tomb Raider showed the industry that a female protag could be successful, and even then it isn't like female protags were particularly flooding the market until only very recently.

Alright, I did the math myself and yes, you are right. Depending on the exact filtering, like include male protagonist AND exclude female and so on, it's about 2~3 times more games with males.

Still, I don't feel it like this at all for some reason. Each time I browse the game list, I'm convinced that 2 out of 3 games have female protagonists only.

9/10 times I opt for a male protagonist but I'm willing to try a game with a female protagonist if it's supposed to be really good.
I'm a true sucker for immersion and for some reason I'm only able to get really immersed with a male protagonist.
