Kirk or picard

I think both have their qualities.

Kirk took less shit. I remember in MAD Magazine they parodied early TNG and when someone attacked them they had Picard like "have our lawyers send them a strong letter!"

which captain do you think was better?
personally i lean more towards kirk
as a captain? Picard 100%. I found him to be more entertaining overall, though I do quite enjoy movie Kirk, Picard and his interactions with his crew are ultimately more my speed. My only experience with Picard however is TNG, and I don't plan to taint that. I have quite the negative opinions on all the newer star trek content outside of the movies Chris Pine played Kirk in.

This is the only question I ever thought was hard...

But seriously, I lean slightly more towards Picard. That might change if I ever watch the series named after him though.

Watched both, and while I do not have anything against Kirk, I prefer Picard.

Kirk was the pure talented captain... Picard was the one who did the most to earn his title...

For a TV series? Neither. I would definitely choose Ed Mercer.

But for much the same reasons I would choose Ed Mercer, if he wasn't available I would prefer James T. Kirk over Jean-Luc Picard.

The reason is that for a TV series I am looking for someone with enough chaotic energy to make things interesting. Ed Mercer is best in this respect, but the Wild West nature of James T. Kirk is a close second. Picard is too perfect and therefore boring.

Now if I were to actually join the crew of a spaceship, I would prefer to have Jean-Luc Picard as my Captain.

I always thought that Picard and Riker are Kirk divided into half
Where Picard is the wise and calm part
while Riker the most aggressive and direct part

Riker is actually based on the Decker character from the Motion Picture and Troi was based on Ilia. Two characters who were supposed to be Star Trek Phase II, a show that never materialized. And while they died in the Star Trek The Motion Picture Roddenberry used them as a template.

Captain Sisko can be the take no prisoners guy and the diplomat both. He has elements of Kirk and Picard all wrapped into one and while Kirk was more of space cowboy and an archetype and Picard was a philosopher, take the aspect away of Sisko being a god and he is just a flesh and blood man in a Starfleet uniform. A much more grounded and realistic character, his being a father and enjoying baseball could just be straight out of the 20th Century. Kirk didn't have the time for a family he had his duty, and Picard never wanted a family accidentally ended up with a son. Despite yearning for that fake family in the Nexus in that Charles Dickens like sequence.

Kirk could pull the hotties, but I liked the gravitas of Picard.

I feel my opinion is biased on fact that i grew up with TNG, so really enjoyed Picard as captain. only experience had with Kirk was movies (both old and new), and while didn't dislike him, I still lean more toward Picard as fav,

both were great in their own time. If I have to choose it's picard.

Used to watch ST:OS reruns when growing up and then ST:TNG when it came on. I used to be Kirk fan when I was young. But now I'm lot older and looking back at both series, I realize that Picard is better captain than Kirk. There is many examples why I think Picard is better captain. I don't want to turn this into a long post. If anyone is interested, I might discuses it.
