Is it me or are games getting slower with updates?

There are a handful of games I like. Devs used to update every month but now it's a few months to half a year apart. What's up with that?

It's the old is the Dev going slow to string out money from subs or are they trying to make a quality product.
Hard to say which devs fit into which category but yes it all results in slower out put.
Moreso if its a game that has multiple paths that lead to different outcomes because a path story will take longer to get out than a straight line sandbox or VN.

Most devs don’t have game developing as their main activity. Maybe with the advance of artificial intelligence, games will start being developed faster

This explains everything.

Really,... like best every update has 2 hours of content, right? Updated every month.

Lazy devs...

i don't see any difference, i only see see difference about their story and slow updates:cry:

I think some sped up during the pandemic/workfromhome now they're back to day jobs in offices and have less time, others are just greedy and vanish for months at a time before crapping out an update that's basically one page of text and 4 pictures

I've noticed it too. Some games that took 3-4 months per update has started to become 6-8 months. I've also noticed that several games are producing less content per update.

Kinetic novels in theory should continue at the same speed unless they are making noticeable improvements. Novels with a lot of branching paths on the other hand, the more branches, the longer it takes because there needs to be script, renders and writing for each and every path. More paths = more time consumed.

Regarding the games I follow, the developers are pretty much on track with their timelines for releasing new updates. Yes, for some it can be 4 months. But if you've been following the development for 2 years, that's fine. Some developers put out new versions monthly, like Faerin does - every last Friday of the month. But none of those developers (at least the ones I follow) have delays in releasing updates. And yes, my condolences to Summertime Saga fans.
Postscriptum: I've noticed that many here don't see the difference between a kinetic novel and a game. I'm a fan of games, not digital comics, which KN is.

Well... as games get longer they often take longer to make... more choices and locations, lewd scenes are more complex than teases, and as devs make more they tend to get more ambitious in what they want to show and more capable of finding small issues and take extra time to fix them. So... I think it should be expected that the longer a game is around the longer it will take between updates. Sometimes that goes a little far because devs are loosing steam or want to milk sub or, more likely, have real world issues that interfere with what is most likely an amateur hobby/passion project.

I don't think the updates get slower maybe you are just getting too delicate in picking what games u watch. The bigger quality of the game the longer it takes to create it. Ofc there are some exceptions :D.

Don't need AI to work. Lol.
It's actually fairly easy to make. The only thing that take the longest is script(The branching paths and whatnot), character creations, and the locations. Once you get all three fixed up, the rest is easy sailing and only come down to time and motivation.

I'm the Dev of Yours Truly, Me. In the process of remaking it. It's a horror interactive story that consist of smols and 5 chapters. Once PC is fixed up, the game will be completed within 2-3 months. Though, I deal in anime style for this one.

Unless I'm mistaken your game isn't on this site?
It intrigued me so I went looking but it didn't turn up in search.

Lol. My Dev's name is Empty Ears Games Studio.

Will send a link via DM. Not really supposed to post links outside of plus.

Good ones.

I'll add another one. A lot of game devs learn their craft by doing. So it is just natural that over time their skills increase, but also their own aspirations regarding content and quality of their game. Renders get better, scenes more complex and stories branch. As a result many artists slump into a deep long lasting crisis if they don't live up to their own growing expectations. Or they rework old scenes. Of course this slows down release cycles.

The most consistent game i've ever seen so far in terms of updates is Corruption of Champions 2 and Trials in Tainted Space, both of whom update monthly without fail.

Best games I've played was Severed Realms, Now and Then, and Mist. There are more but I like to keep it simple to top 3.
I didn't know Severed Realms was a game - just the chief here (not owner.) Yes, it does seem newer ones get slower than older ones at the same point.
