hello! i am a pretty uneducated dude in what reading books is concerned, i get my entertainment and stories from games and series almost exclusively, yet this year i finally wanted to give reading actual books a try.
problem for me is i dont really have friends that read stuff outside of the classic harry potter, lord of the rings, self help or how to make money books and the like, so they cant really recommend something i would like.
so i want to ask you all for book recommendations! so far i found out i really like ''mountain man'' books by keith c. blackmoore (made it to book 5)
i also gave it a try to ''he who fights with monsters'' wich was pretty interesting at the start but it kinda lost me for a bit
also if it help, here are some of my favorite stories/lore ever:
pmd explorers of sky
disco elysium
13 sentinels: aegis rim
umineko when they cry
lisa: the painful
yakuza 0
the good place
Final fantasy Xiv: shadowbringers
better call saul/breaking bad
Adventure time
the wolf among us

any suggestion is welcome, be it sfw/nsfw, audiobook, a fanfic even!

Don't read many books myself, but maybe the Metro titles might interest you
Eragon, Erebos and the never ending story comes in my mind aswell

Replay by Ken Grimwood (Science Fiction) One of my favourites.
Altered Carbon by Ricard Morgan (Science Fiction)
Red Rising by Pierce Brown (Sci-fy/fantasy) Would go with the audio book and to be specifc the Dramatized Adaption.
12 Miles Below by Mark Arrows (Progression Fantasy)
Bastion by Phil Tucker (Progression Fantasy)
Dissonance by Nicoli Gonella (Litrpg)
Warlock by Daniel Kensington (NSWF, harem, fantasy) One of the best Haremlit
Towers of Acalia by Atlas Kane (NSFW, harem, fantasy, anime-like)
Apocalypse Gates by Daniel Schinhofen (NSWF, harem, zombie apocalypse)
Rise of the Weakest Summoner by J.R Saileri (NSWF, harem, fantasy, anime-like)
Saving Supervillains by Bruce Sentar (NSWF) A fun read.
Tamer King of Dinosaurs by Micheal-Earl Scott (NSWF, Sci-fy/fantasy) Also a fun read

I can give more recomendations but these are off the top of my head. It really depends on what genre you like more.

Best point to start are short stories, not long books. Something that will give you a complete tale on less than 80 pages. Additionally, id recommmend Terry Pratchett. Short books (most are less than 300 pages), witty with great characters and world building. Then go to heroic/action fantasy - Witcher, Dresden files.

I struggled as a kid with reading and spelling for years i was embarrassed at how bad it was so i avoided it at all costs. i cant remember when that changed. i fell in love with reading/books in my late 20's. then i discovered audio books and honestly prefer this over tv. i now run audiobookshelf on my home server. fuck audible. It also means than VN's must have decent writing otherwise i struggle to enjoy it.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown (Sci-fy/fantasy) Would go with the audio book and to be specifc the Dramatized Adaption.
This 100% - recommended

my top suggestions
The way of shadows - Brent weeks - Night Angel series
The Painted Man - Peter V Brett - The Demon Cycle series
The Shadow of what was lost - James Islington - The Licanius Trilogy
Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson - Mistborn saga
The Passage - Justin Cronin - The Passage Trilogy

The above are not short/quick reads - my recommendation for newish readers so as to not get overwhelmed with the complexity of the world/lore/political structure these guys have is a young adult series but i still very much adore this one,
The knife of never letting go - Patrick Ness - Chaos Walking (there is no such thing as a move adaptation of this book) Manchee is such a god boy (iykyk)

and of course for the lewdness an honorable mention to
Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov. - must admit it got pretty stale for my half way through, but i did enjoy the psychological aspect of Humbert's reasoning when meeting Lolita's mother and the event that follow, and the corruption and dynamic shift between Humbert and Lolita.

I love the books from Randall Munroe. But It's not a story book. I don't read story books

In terms of what I'm currently reading, there is "Armored", by John Joseph Adams. It's collection of short short stories by various authors featuring various scifi settings with power armor.

If its visual novels, I'm going through the original Tsukihime again. Mostly for technical stuf incomparing it to the remake.

In hindsight, I'm not sure if I'm can suggest webnovels dilue to the nature of most of them of being fan tramslated.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - sci fi/comedy - Ive read this about 10 times and bought it as gift around 5 times. Probably the funniest book ever. Plus the sequels are all good, the 3rd is amazing. Earth is destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass, last survivor of Earth bumbles around looking for tea.
The Thief of Always by Clive Barker - fantasy / horror - only book I've ever read in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. Like a adult fairy tale. Mr Fox's house where its Chistmas every day.
It by Stephen King - horror - a classic, better than the TV or films, so much dark stuff you just couldn't put on screen.
The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham - sci fi - No Kraken, its an alien invasion story told by a survivor detailing how they didnt even know they had been invaded until it was too late.
John Dies at the End by David Wong - sci fi / horror /comedy - Hard to explain this, an interdimensional drug gives the abilty to see monsters usually invisible, Bizarre and really funny.
The Death of Grass by John Christopher - sci fi - The orginal cosy catastrophy. Plants start to die which leads to society breaking down as food runs out. A group make for a hideway but will they have to shed their humanity to survive?
James Bond by Ian Flemming - different to the films and in different order. Less gadgets, more smoking and drinking. Bond is a hard nut in the books and doenst fuck around, well worth looking at, Casino Royal is still the first book. Bit of a trilolgy with On Her Majesties Secret Service (gets married to the Bond girl, she dies), You Only Live Twice (seeks revenge, loses memory), The Man with the Golden Gun (regains memory, has to prove who he is by killing the world's deadliest man).

strongly recomendany of those, all great

I don't read much anymore but I did read "House of Leaves" last year and really enjoyed it. I suppose it'd be called it a psychological horror with some bizarre meta elements you encounter more and more while reading, and that's all I'll say.

Learned about its existence after seeing a reddit thread about infamous game mods and heared about the Doom mod, "My House", which I played and thoroughly enjoyed. Looked up more information on the mod after (which is a whole rabbit hole in itself) and the book came up repeatedly so I bought it. Did not regret.

Several options that might be of interest:

1) for character driven Sci-Fi try Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. I recommend starting with 'The Warriors Apprentice' as the starting point.

2) Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern is quite good. Start with the original series 'Dragonflight', Dragonquest', and 'The White Dragon'. These are more fantasy than some of the later books that shift to Sci-Fi.

3) For a REALLY fun story I recommend 'I, Q' by John De Lancie. I's a Star Trek next gen-based story, but is VERY fun.

-WARNING-
These stories will either be fun and suck you into new worlds you enjoy, or you will decide they are not for you. IF you enjoy them, you WILL may get addicted to Sci-Fi/Fantasy and never escape. :)

Hope that helps.

The Martian/Project Hail Mary are good, accessible Sci-Fi stories if you're into that. And if you like zombie stuff, you should definitely give World War Z a try! It's not too long, very unique and (IMO) much better than the movie adaptation ദ്ദി ˊ ᗜ ˋ )

I've also started listening to audiobooks lately, my favs rn are Project Hail Mary, the Bobiverse series and Dungeon Crawler Carl- while I generally prefer reading more they do a good job of taking advantage of that medium ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ

Percy Jackson of Percy Jackson and the Olympians presumably? rather than Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings, Bad Taste etc.

Fantasy

The name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Conan by Robert E. Howard (the books not the comics)

Sci-fi

Neuromancer by William Gibson

And I heard that the movie "Arrival" was based on a book as well that I am yet to read called "Story of tour Life" by Ted Chiang

+1 on Story of Your Life, it's a short story (only 20ish pages iirc) but it and all the other included stories are worth reading! And the movie is awesome too, it's Denis Villeneuve's best film imo
