Admittedly, I don't know anything about setting up a JPK for Android, but... how does stuff like this even happen? Since I'm unfamiliar with doing that, to an outsider like me it just sounds like, "I was putting something new on my computer to be able to make an Android version, and then suddenly, magically everything got deleted." Maybe if somebody explains, it will make more sense.

after many decades of using computers everyday this has never happened to me.
crashes, corrupted files & some unrecoverable files yes but never total (POOF) its gone because i installed something.

i've used free recovery software & got back 80+% of lost files, no way i'm spending 400 to 1200 on recovery software when most digital stuff if out there for free.

Np the dev so far is only on a. t.f. if you heard of that site I guess they are to busy with a lot of stuff with irl and the game to make it to this site for now probably one day though they can.

Another update from the dev:

I think I'm going to try and rewrite Chapter 2 to the best of my abilities. The dialog may not be the exact same, but I've got an exact idea of the timeline, scene's, etc etc etc. It'll have to be a separate download from Chapter 1 as I lost all of those files, but. Maybe Chapter 2 continued. I was extremely excited to share it today, and the story is very close to me. I've got ideas for other projects, but I feel very earnestly that the next chapter in this needs to come out, even if it takes me another month to redo. Hell, I've spent the last few hours redownloading tons of VAM assets, trying to recreate the characters and their morphs. Isabella's pretty buttoned up, starting on Alex now. Marisol honestly doesn't have too much done to her, so it's mostly the main two. Other than that, I've got most of the environments redownloaded, although there's a playground scene in Chapter 2 that took me a day or two to build from scratch since there's not any readily available playgrounds that I've found.

Many lesson's learned though, and hopefully you guys stick around for it. <3

Yep. I pretty much assumed what was claimed was impossible, that something else happened as well, like stupidly selecting all primary, top-level folders in the OS and confirming permanent deletion of them or something. Unless what you downloaded has a virus and you're not protected, there's no way installing an app or an extension to allow a JPK to be created should be anywhere remotely close to as devastating as what was described. But since technically I don't know what all is involved in making a JPK, I'll allow some leeway for ridiculous-sounding explanations.

I told the dev about this site but guess they haven't made an account here yet but this is what they said on another site on the game as a status update etc.

Well.. Sorry about this guys.. This almost brings me to tears just typing this.
I finished Chapter 2 today. Well over a month of working on it in all of my free time. Hundreds of new renders, over 13 new animations, dozens of hours of coding and setting up scene's, I even built a playground from scratch learning to import assets from Unity. Spent all afternoon today working on a gallery for it.
I built the distro's for Mac, Windows and Linux, and was about to upload chapter 2 in full today, however when setting up the JPK for android, it completely wiped my drive that I had everything on.
The script, the backup script, all my assets, all my VAM stuff, every image and animation, are all gone.
I had everything backed up in a different place on the drive, and it wiped that too. I paid quite a bit of money for a recovery software this afternoon, but it was completely overwritten and I'm not sure what to do. I don't even have access to the first chapter stuff.
I was going to move everything onto a flash drive just as soon as the Android distribution finished, but unfortunately it was too late.
I'm absolutely heartbroken. I don't have a lot of free time, and what I did have was poured over this game for weeks and weeks now.
I can try to redownload VAM and start from scratch but the amount of time lost is astronomical. I'm just not sure what to do. I could try to download Chapter 1 as you guys have and copy the code over, but. I'm not sure. I'm just out of time for right now. I'll keep everyone updated, as this project is very near and dear to me, but. I just don't know what to do and I'm absolutely heartbroken.

I'm sorry, I can't feel badly for this dev. This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard related to accidental drive wiping/file deletion. Also, I had an OS fail that I didn't back the files up on before trying some exotic repair methods, I even changed the logical addressing of the geometry (fucking stupid, I know. I was desperate and pretty young at the time...) and I was still able to recover most file segments after that fail, although without proper metadata/extensions for most of them. Something is not adding up here.

Update from the dev:

I had a 16 hour shift today, but when I can tinker on it, I will, I’d love to just rebuild into the existing download if I could, so chapter 1 flows into chapter 2 instead of being a separate download. And, unfortunately no there’s no backups of the chapter 2 distro’s. I had it all in a folder that got overwritten when the JPK software corrupted. The android version was the last thing I was going to do before uploading anywhere.

On modern hard drives, due to the very dense data tracks, one complete overwrite with random data or zeros is normally enough. But yes, if the data wasn't overwritten it's probably recoverable. Unless the data was very fragmented.
For SSDs it's copmpletely different, since the data is not saved in a specific order and only the controller knows in which cells the data is saved. The controller protects the cells, so you can't simply overwrite it. But if the file system table gets corrupted, it's possible that the data is gone for good.

Yea, the only time I've had total data loss was when I had a NAND controller failure on a drive for which the encryption nobody has cracked yet. Even with an SSD, this doesn't pass the smell test.

I have actually seen this happen once, but I am not saying this is the same error. A friend of mine got his drive viped when installing a software for building Android packages. The sw. reformatted or somehow changed the file system to adapt it to Linux and Android.

As you can read, the dev. lost the complete source code to the game, including the already published chapter 1. So I don't expect anything to show up for several months.
