The one place of hiding things from anyone... hide it at the very top of a shelf, one that is required to use a chair to get to. If it were about the other OS, I could help you and do things in such a way that the user wouldn't be able to see even the file names inside the target directory (basically the system would stop them the moment they clicked on the target dir) and we'd do that without using third party software with questionable origin.

I suppose you could try editing group policies but that's not 100% proof bc if the user knows at least a bit about the group policies and they're at least a power user, they could go around these policies by simply creating a second Administrator account, thus negating all your efforts. Or, if they're like me, they could simply open CMD and type "net user Administrator [new password] [new password]" and gain full access to everything you've tried to hide. Windows' security is so funny, that it's not worth the effort.

In short words, and all should works on Windows 10 and 11, and some even on Linux/MacOS:

• Use a fully-encrypted virtual machine, play it with VMware Player or VirtualBox.
• Use VeraCrypt (or similar tool) to create a virtual, encrypted disk. VeraCrypt is free, while most alternatives are paid.
• Use an external, encrypted drive.
  • You can find pen drives or external SSD 2"5 drives running an hardware AES-256 encryption.
  • Use a device with biometric / 2FA authentification: the ones based on a constant PIN code with a numeric keyboard on them are shit.
• Setup YOUR account as the only administrator, and tweak ACLs so that nobody but you can access this folder (basic NT security).
  • Use NTFS native encryption on your folder - nothing is hidden, but it cannot be opened / launched without YOUR account.
  • Must be used in addition to ACLs to forbid parsing the folder.
• Put your files on a distinct partition, mount in in a NTFS folder instead of using a drive letter, and enable/disable the partition to get access to the files.
  • Instead of a physical partition / disk, you can create a VHD (virtual disk) in "Disk Management / Action / Create VHD" and do the same.
  • It is possible to fully encrypt the disk, even if virtual, through BitLocker.
  • Can be used in addition to the ACLs for more security.
  • Hide and mount can be automated by using diskpart.

  • Save as always, requires that you're the only administrator, obviously...

Anyway, remember the basic security ("encryption" means "full disk encryption with a strong password different from your Windows account's password"):

1. An administrator can ALWAYS undo what you've done, unless you use encryption. Be the only administrator, don't give your password to anyone.
2. Anybody who can access the physical computer / drive can get access to data within, unless you use encryption, by removing the drive from its case and plug it on another computer.
3. Only encrypted virtual disks (or similar containers) can be left on an unencrypted drive without (too much) security issues. Encrypted archives are expanded to be used, therefore unencrypted files may stay in TEMP folder and/or on unallocated disk space. Encrypted VHD are never decrypted on disk, but only in RAM.
4. However, unless ALL your drives are encrypted, beware of what softwares can leave on the computer: temporary files, recently used files, "persistent saves" (i.e. saved in a account-based or system-based folder instead of a subfolder within game/application's folder). Swap and hibernation files can also contains unencrypted data. That's why a fully-encrypted virtual machine can be safer - and the VM itself can be on a external drive, and if the external drive is encrypted then you can discard (near) any security for the VM itself.

so Microsoft basically removed the ability to password a folder on windows 10 because your account is already protected. the problem is that it's really not, physically anyone can access your computer. so I have a password when entering windows, but why can't I just bypass that by using safe mode and then removing the password? unless it can't be done (pretty sure it can and at most I just need to access my email) and let's say I encrypt a folder (properties allows this) it means that unless someone uses windows via my user, they will never be able to access that folder?

I often don't lock my computer (again, anyone can probably hack it like nothing, this isn't an iphone, pc's are super easy to hack if you have physical access) I would just prefer if no one finds the 75 mother milf daughter lesbian incest videos I have inside that folder. pretty sure it's not that bad tho, people probably have some really fucked up stuff saved on their computers XD

I know there is a script I can run that basically allows me to lock the folder by making it vanish and then show it again via the script exe by using a password. however it works on a single folder so if it has any more folders inside of it, it won't work as well. basically what I want is for anyone to try to open that folder and not be able to without a password, and that you can't just download a hacking app and gz folder is unlock after 5 minutes. I also don't want to zip/rar it with a password because then I can't keep using it without extracting it every single time. another problem is renpy games for example that show up as game saves inside user folder/appdata/roaming.

it is truly annoying how programs tend to spread all over the place instead of remaining in a single location.

I don't want to hide the folder, that would be too simple of solution and I happen to like everything unlocked and shown for faster access.
