I've been using bitlocker or archives with ridiculously long passwords, but i'm stupid and forget the passwords. and i can't write them down, because then they're usable. and finding out that bitlocker drives made in windows 7 don't register in windows 11, or that RandoCryptApp x.x.3 doens't handle RandoCryptApp x.x.2 crypts, or that this drive i encrypted doesn't even mount... sucks.

If I get hit by a bus i'd like the only trace to be oddly full hard drives full of random files nobody knows what to do with. But I'd like to actually have access and not have to constantly retain 60 character password strings in meat-RAM for decades. I don't really know what else to do though. (BTW on Windows right now but learning a few Linux: microsoft can suck my anus)

Anybody have any good, solid ideas? Use a VPN, use a dedicated browser with privacy controls, but i feel like there's probably much better approaches for storage/access.

I suppose it depends on the legality of the games you have in the jurisdiction of where you live and how uptight the local enforcers are.
but IMHO minimum is use Linux, encrypted drives , use accounts which are pretty if not fully anonymous, and as always just hope for the best.
put it this way if they really want to find you they will, and if you don't comply with their demands for access, they'll do you with not complying with their demands, "catch 22"

that or live in a zone where they have bigger things to worry about than a few pervs playing pervy games online.

I'd say I'm not in such a country but we elected an orange clown twice. I'm not downloading illegal stuff, mostly games and art, but that's somehow worse than actually doing the illegal stuff the art is about. And they're gunning to make a lot of really mundane stuff illegal, so the future is murky.
What's a good encryption system? Bitlocker clearly isn't it, and the various XXX-crypts aren't as futureproof as I'd like.

And I'm not keen on using credit/bank cards to pay for private emails or any games, but I'd like to support artists and devs. Other than 'figure out crypto', what can be done?

No way. My family members know about my hobby, and I have no one to be shy or afraid of. Possession of such materials is not a crime in our country, so I see no reason to worry.

That's actually pretty amazing. How much do they know and what is that interaction like? It's such a foreign concept to me, but it sounds kind of liberating.

If by "they" you mean my family members, then it's simple. My wife and I sometimes watch different videos and movies "to recharge our batteries". Daughter (teenager, 13 years old) we don't let her get involved in this case, but I know for sure (sometimes I have to clean her laptop of all kinds of software debris) that she periodically looks at various naughty sites. My (and my wife's) position is that bans can't achieve anything. Education is another matter. My wife talks to her to prepare her for adulthood, and I buy specialized books. Of the 14 external disks on which I have my home film library, 2 (that's 8 terabytes) are occupied by BD editions of classics of the genre of the 70s and 80s. There are no passwords. If the daughter is watching it, OK. I repeat, bans don't do anything.
If we talk about the position of the state, no one gives a shit. For example, it is not difficult to assemble a complete filmography of films featuring Traci Lords. Restored, in HD. If I'm not mistaken, only one of her films is legal in the States.

what? "allowed"? No, it's not illegal, but i have a very religious family and I'm a freak. I'd like to not give them heart attacks. I also snooped a bunch as a kid, and my kids snoop.

Cloud is Catch 22. Forever but not private and thus forever incriminating.


Password protected USBs with backup when their health deteriorates same goes for HDD/SSDs. Windows killed pass locking files about a decade ago if memory serves. Could probably do it on Lnx though.

You probably don't need encryption from what I understand, and this is almost ** level op-sec. But in case you're completely legal, I'd advise VeraCrypt. If you're doing illegal stuff, ill simply advice you to stop.

What???
In what world is cloud service safe? Unless you encrypt it yourself, it is not safe. You can leave encrypted data on cloud services to make it safer, but you're still leaving your data in the hands of other people, and you don't know if they really value privacy, or if they say they do.

I am thankful that I have a partner who has no issue with porn. If anything were to happen, she'd be the only one who would have access, so that's pretty secure. The reverse is true as well.

But if I were actually concerned, I think encryption would be the move.
