999 million. Billionaires should not exist. Anything else they get is taxed at 100%.
Or at the very least they shouldnt have that much more than their lowest paid employeeI think a good idea would be if the richest person in a nation couldn't have more than about 1000 times what the poorest has. Some sort of redistribution through taxes. Not counting someone who actually chooses poverty (as in an ascetic monk, etc) or someone in prison.
if the money is earned through good, decent work,... don't know why it should have a limit.
The problem is that 99% of the richest absolutely did not earn the absolutely absurd amount of wealth they have. If we're paying people based on how much that worked for it, CEO's would be getting paid less than teachers, doctors, and even some minimum wage workers. No limit. You earn it, you deserve it.
TBH most rich are so because of a combination of luck and ruthless exploitation of the working class - most were born with money. A lot of people in the US right now barely have enough to live on, not to mention how many are even homeless. It's obscene that there are billionaires and homeless in the same country. My advice: Stop being jealous. One of the keys to a happy life is to be thankful for the blessings you have. If you sit around that you have less than Bill Gates or Tom Hanks, then you are guaranteed to be miserable.
A couple of things to keep in perspective:
Rich people are rich because they had incentive to become rich. If you take that incentive away, we all suffer. The inventor of the iPhone got rich, but the rest of us got iPhones! Our lives are better because of them. They provide jobs, they make us all better off.
The show "Shark Tank" features ordinary people who bring products or services to market that make all of us better off. They come up with a product, we all buy it, they make tons of money, everyone is happy! It's a great system. American dream. Why would you mess with that?
Secondly, you are probably already rich. By the world's standards, you are wealthy beyond imagination. If you make $60,000 a year after taxes, you are in the richest one percent of the world population. Even low income Americans live better than 90 percent of the world. By historic standards, you are living the dream. Can you imagine what someone 100 years ago or 1000 years ago would say about our way of life? Drive cars, fly in airplanes, watch TV whenever you want, grocery stores, fast food, free education, leisure time, not to mention all the civil liberties people from long ago could only dream of like freedom of religion and freedom of speech?
Quit your belly aching. You're on top of the world. You just don't know it.
A lot of people are homeless due to substance abuse and mental illness. If confiscatory tax rates were the silver bullet you were looking for, then places like Illinois and California would have zero homeless.TBH most rich are so because of a combination of luck and ruthless exploitation of the working class - most were born with money. It's not stealing. Becoming rich is usually from stealing the labor of others by underpaying them. Getting rich isn't about hard work - people who work the hardest make the least. Most people who work ARE exploited, especially in ultra-capitalist hellscapes like the US. The more income inequality there is, the worse a society is.A lot of people are homeless due to substance abuse and mental illness. If confiscatory tax rates were the silver bullet you were looking for, then places like Illinois and California would have zero homeless.
When you go into work and get paid for that work, do you call that being exploited? No wonder you're so depressed!
There is a very funny YouTube video that neatly illustrates the point. A guy walks around a college campus. First he asks: "Should rich people be forced to give their money to poor people." Student after student reply "Yes!" Then they were asked: "If you worked hard in a class and got an 'A' and another student didn't work very hard and got a 'C,' isn't the only fair thing to do is give both of you a 'B"? Every student suddenly became a capitalist and said "No way! I earned that A!"
If you feel guilty because others are less fortunate than you, then try volunteering. I do it. It's great. Serving your community is a great way to meet people and I guarantee it will brighten your outlook. Stop feeding your envy and jealousy. You're not going to find the road to happiness by stealing from others.
So limit the amount that can be taken out of the country. It doesn't work. You think Mark Zuckerberg and Taylor Swift are just going to just stand around while you confiscate their private jets and their swimming pools? Not a chance. They will be more than happy to move all their wealth to somewhere you can't touch it. Meanwhile, on the streets of San Francisco, we will still be stepping around used needles and piles of poop.
99% of financial success is pure luck.Solving the homeless problem can't be accomplished with money. Most homeless are there due to substance abuse and mental illness.
The second problem is that politicians are corrupt. The people who tell you they care about the homeless are lying to you. California started a program two years ago designed to "solve" the homeless problem. They spent billions and billions. Every cent of that money was stolen. Every dime gone. The homeless problem was not solved. Not even a little bit. They have identified at least one of the organizations that stole the money. You want to give them billions more? They'll steal it again.
The problem with confiscating money from people is that you will kill the goose that laid the golden egg. The golden egg in this case is the wonderful economic system that allows all of us to enjoy a standard of living that your ancestors could only dream about. There are countries in Africa where people barely have enough to eat that would love to have grocery stores and laptops and cars and clean running water. We have those things because we reward people who take risks that create jobs and create products that we all need and enjoy.
It's sad that you are so unhappy. Instead of being jealous of others, why don't you try becoming rich yourself? Go to school, work your ass off, produce something that lots of other people want to buy, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Stop drinking, stop eating crap, go to bed on time, take a walk once in while, volunteer. You'll stop feeling miserable about yourself and you'll stop being a burden to others. Try it.
