discussion How big of a harem is too big?

I will agree with many here on the VN point as character development is quite important but i will be a bit more over ambitious and say around 10 is a nice end number where it could start at 6 and the 4 extra added later being your own daughters.
On other games such as say lilith's throne or freecities i will generally just keep going and aim for the world! If the universe is my oyster one has to at least have one of each species. Pokemon helped me become overly ambitious with internal fantasy of gotta breed them all!

I think 5-7 is around my limit.

Games that go overboard with the harem (10+) become boring due to lack of character development, lack of focus on specific characters I like, or just fizzle out as there's just too much to do.

Spot on. Too many characters and the content for each of them will probably be unsatisfactory. And you start to have less interaction with each of them. A very good story teller can push it a bit more, but not much.

You can still have a decent story with around a dozen members of the harem but once you reach the point where characters just blur together it's definitely too much.

5-10 girls you are interacting whit in the story, no limits on girls they bring whit them as long you just need to give them a name or number.
