Personally think Nvidia is better than AMD for GPUs, just on a driver level

no not anymore, sure it was a nice meme back in the day
but as one who uses/ needs both GPU's at a pro level i can tell you they both Fuck up just as much on the driver part
and there actually isn't that much difference anymore
(example 7 months ago some AMD problems where there , and in dec/jan Nvidia had there screwups with graphic interfaces and games )

but i also say, aslong as you are happy with your GPU, and it runs what you want it to run , stick with it

I've seen the same game running in both side by side - and couldn't see any difference at all. But my eyes are pretty bad, so maybe that's it. On the plus side I save a fortune in hardware.

I have to agree here, 4k is overrated in my opinion, but 1440p makes a huge difference over 1080p

RTX 4090 is the best graphics card currently available, but it also costs quite a bit more than the competition if you can call it that (7900 XTX).
If you are doing anything but gaming (That is unless you're a fan of raytracing.) then Nvidia is what you should be aiming for.
However, we are currently late in the cycle of the current generation of graphics cards so buying one right now may not be a great idea, the new ones are most likely being released later this year.

I switched from Nvidia to AMD, because of the bullshit with the memory of the GTX 9
then came astronomically high prices ... with covid
the path to AMD was free...

Unfortunately, they also have their problems, especially with drivers ... and since they are now technologically behind in AI and ray tracing, I will probably go back to Nvidia for the next one.
Even if with a teary eye, they could really use a competitor to come down from their sky rocket prices.

The 4090 is so far as I know the apex regarding raw power, perhaps AMD has closed the gap some since I last paid attention to such things. As far as I understand it at least for the next few generation neither AMD or Intel is going to make any serious attempt at challenging Nvidia's Halo GPU's. Stick with Nvidia over AMD.

While the AMD chipset (cpu) is fairly robust and has seen about a 40% adoption rate in PC games,

The AMD video cards are still only at about a 5-7% market share.

The fact that many PC gamers were willing to jump from Intel to AMD for chipset, shows that they aren't particularly 'fanboy' biased, and don't have a problem with AMD as a company.

Given that point, the stark lack of adoption of AMD video cards, by those same PC gamers is very telling, especially given the price difference and availability.

My recommendation is that you look at the Nvidia Super line.
They are significantly cheaper than the 4090 and the 4080 Super still has 16gb Vram. Outside of LLM's and some other specific applications, a gamer isn't going to see much of a performance difference for only 50%-66% of the price of the 4090.

I first went with the AMD 7900XTX card when I started diving into stable diffusion. The specs read just fine and it was way cheaper than the 4090. However, I ran into stability problems with the GPU overheating so that the whole system went into emergency shutdown every five minutes. I found no way to prevent this.

I returned the card and paid twice as much for the Nvidia. And boy what a difference. No more stability issues, no overheating under heavy load, less noise and most important of all, nearly 5 - 10 times as fast with automatic1111 and ComfyUI. Yes, up to 10 times faster with standard setup and no optimizations.

I'm all for underdogs, but in this case, sorry, the Nvidia is much much better. You just have to decide if you want to pay the price. Once you do, you will not regret it.

Your situation is similar to what I have experienced.

I have two setups at my home office.

1) is my work computer it has a 4090ti and uses a Ryzen chipset - works well.
2) is my work 'compiler' which uses an Nvidia A100 (this isn't a consumer type card), This machine uses an i9 Chipset.

CPU's is a 'pick your poison' and doesn't matter too much.

GPU, I cannot recommend AMD for either gaming or commercial use. Nvidia is expensive, VERY expensive, but thats what you pay for reliability.
