if the story of the game fails to entertain me then yeah i skip it

Depends iif the story is slow start i have skipped to see if it picks up, but usually ill just close the game and move on

Same as in Jrpg : it needs to do a decent job and not be overly verbose...

Only when the grindy parts start to be repetitive with the same dialogue over and over. Otherwise, I'm pretty connected to the dialogue.

Depends on the narrative , of course, and if the game is TOO grindy.

Some of the games as of late are 3-4 updates with more story than fucking and if you are pretty late game you need a good mix not 70/30 or 80/20 story/fucking
I just wanted to appreciate this comment before addressing the OG post.
I feel like some of the VNs I've gotten into, as they update they add a bunch of fluff without anything particularly enticing. For these, the story has to be good for me to keep up.

So to start with for story vs sex scenes, for me the story is super important to add context to a scene. It's much hotter when I know the two characters are exploring something for the first time for instance, or are in a risky environment. Without the text I'd have no idea if it was a good scene. So when I do skip, it's typically not to avoid story, but to make sure it's the kind of story I want.

Now, the main post, skipping. Why and how
I skip through content already read, mostly when trying alternate paths. The skip feature in a lot of games is nice cause it's very fast, and stops immediately upon either a new image, or new text, and then I can roll back to see where in the story it was. (this was ideal for Hillside, because each route precludes others, and I was fond of many of the love interests. Lucy is my bae)

I also skip when I'm trying to either see if the sex scenes are worth a damn, and I've not seen any in maybe two hours of game play. Gallery unlocks help with that, as do people with signatures for the game, oddly. But if I do this, and find it appealing, I immediately reload from before I skipped, and continue reading.

I hate clicking or hitting spacebar. Most of the VNs I read are either RenPy or use a similar UI; and one of the things I've noticed is I can set the text speed to instant, and set the auto speed incredibly short. This is not as fast as skip, but it is much faster and less noisy than me clicking constantly.
I do this when I'm trying to catch up where I am in a story, if I've got it on my phone and PC. I did this with Eternum, cause I couldn't put that game down for the life of me.

Now, I have to put a couple caveats in. Bad writing does not necessarily mean the content is bad. The biggest offender for me, when I have to put a story down is when the author is either really bad with English, or it''s clearly been translated from another language really poorly. It's hard to immerse myself in the world and characters when they refer to a bed as a couch repeatedly for instance.

depends on content , some games is just for fapping and the story is shitty :/ but 70 percent of games i try to read all

Hmmm, I usually give them the series/anime treatment, if the first 20-40 minutes (1 or 2 episodes for series) doesn't hook me then I'll start skipping.

If i like the character that i like that speaks then no , but if i dont straight to the garbage bin

Anytime I start skipping the dialog, I turn the game off. That tells me that I am tired and its time to take a break.

I dont play for the porn only. I play for the story and everything that comes with it. If I'm not going to keep up with tge dialog, then the game isn't for me.

Yes, if the art and animation are of good quality, but the story, characters and dialogues are bad (although in such cases I'm happy if there is a Gallery Unlock Mod)

Depends, if the art is great but trash story, absolutely.
If both are good then yeah ill read through it.

I try to not skip in the beginning and get an idea if the story is going to be good. If it's good, perfect, if it's bad but the graphics are good, I skip, and tend to delete the game after. If it's clear at a glance that there won't be much of a story I usually avoid the "game" altogether.

nah, not usually. if you're gonna do that, just find some porn pictures

i usually just read the characters/paths that i like, otherwise everything else is a skip

If a story gets too boring then I end up skipping through.

I have a simple rule:
If i can skip through the entire game it isnt a game.

Most visual novels are unneccery wordy, long and drawn out with often horrible story.
Worse are the simi serious stories.
Those who want to pretend there "realistic" while at the same time having the most rediculess thing happen to get to the sex scenes(Looking at you blackheart personal assistiance)

I pretty much ignore visual novels.
If i want to just read and fap i go to an archieve of our own and if i wanted pictures there is normal porn or hentai.

To put it simply.
For me not to skip the story much be interesting.
And broken up by pieces of accaul gameplay.
A tip for any writter.
Dont use 50 words for what can be said with 5.
I swear these visual novels pride themselves on dragging things out.
