Do you prefer playing a VN with a Walkthrough Mod. Why/why not?

- crookedness is a bit harsh. IMO things like that are mostly tied to inexperience or very particular vision. Most of (a)VN's i played are impassable because... they are simply never finished.:p

But on more serious note, most of "modern" (a)VNS are what i call "hidden kinetic", in other words they may present you with some choices, but those choices at best affect what scenes you will see and thats it. In comparison to classic japanese (a)VNS that had actual routes and multiple different ending this is a gigantic simplification.

As for "impassable" part... i have to disagree here too. There are really no such thing in VN's. As even bad ending is an ending. The whole gameplay of any proper VN ( not kinetic ones ) is built around finding all available content in the game. Which obviously includes "bad endings".

Now the problem with some VN's ( not just A type ), is that their authors either inexperienced or have really weird and particular vision... I can give you few examples for non (a)VN's. Untale - a VN about prince inheriting a throne during "time of troubles", in this game any attempt to hold on to power will lead you to bad end. So its variation comes down to a single choice - hold to crown and you will get bad end no matter what. Is that really a crookedness? Or just inexperionce/really particular vision of dev? Id say its second. Other example - Everlasting Summer. A game about a modern russian b-tard isekaied to soviet era summer camp. The game has quite few different routes and many endings... but "good" variations of those are hidden behind so convoluted choices, that they are not realistically achievable without either walktrough or really meticulous trying-every-possible-choice-combination type of play. And again same question - is that a sign of crookedness or just inexperience/really particular vision behind project? Frankly, i never in my life seen a VN that i would have called to be made by a crook. Unless we count modern crowdfunded indie AVNS entering milk mode.
We can recall the projects by SerialNumberComics (Jen's Dilemma, FOTM, Tangled Up). The peculiarity of these games is that it is quite difficult to complete them even with the walkthrough. A very typical example is Tangled Up, even with a detailed walkthrough in front of my eyes, I couldn't complete this game. I do not know how to characterize this developer. Perhaps he enjoys deliberately mocking the public, who knows? There was another VN/game - Ring of Lust, the champion in the number of softlocks per unit of playing time, they occurred even when following the walkthrough carefully, as it turned out later, he made some mistakes in the code. I don't know how this epic ended, but at some point I just stopped following this game.Another example, however, is a game, not a VN, Straitened Times. A significant part of the plot episodes in it are triggered by RNG, i.e. writing a walkthrough for this game is a hopeless task, there were attempts, but they all failed. But the game has good gameplay and you can complete it if you have strong nerves and stoic patience.

I think for most games I always hav a story in mind that I'm looking to experience and a walkthrough mod just helps towards that. I appreciate ones where you can choose what you're after and the walkthrough directs you as appropriate.

If its clear how to progress then no but if its not clear with hidden outcomes then yes.

I do, but its only because I typically have a character I like and sometimes the choices to go down that characters route are really hard to identify.

Yes, if there are values attached to choices. I like to know the outcomes to see what I'm working towards.
If the choices are binary just to see a particular scene or not, it's not necessary.

I try to finish two paths by myself, after that i do check a walktrough to complet the rest of the game. I do it because lack of time to play everything that i want to play!

i do with games that has a lot of branching paths so i can avoid things that I dont want to see e.g gay stuff

if it is availabe i always follow walkthrough to not miss anything.

Depends how well made the VN is. If it's not too confusing and punishing, then no walthrough makes it more enjoyable

I play without the walkthrough, because with walkthrough it’s like playing a kinetic novel. But if there are different paths, then i use the walkthrough, because i get bored of having to restart the game just to make different choices that lead to situations i haven’t seen. Especially in the avn where you don’t know if a choice will have repercussions in the future

- still disagree that it is "crookedness". Its just his style. Like it or not. He clearly likes it. Even thou i agree that his games are quite... "tangled up" from design POV.

The peculiarity of these games is that it is quite difficult to complete them even with the walkthrough. A very typical example is Tangled Up, even with a detailed walkthrough in front of my eyes, I couldn't complete this game. I do not know how to characterize this developer. - i thought it was abandoned. I remember that i stuck at some point with pregnant sis in their friends home. I think i even ripped images to check if there were any content there, and there were non. Any way. Its just his style. His games are quite repetitive/grindy but at the same time, they dont have convoluted navigation and dont paywall content or milk subs. You may not like his style, but this is hardly justifies calling him a crook.

There was another VN/game - Ring of Lust, the champion in the number of softlocks per unit of playing time, they occurred even when following the walkthrough carefully, as it turned out later, he made some mistakes in the code.
- so same story. Just dev inexperience. A bug. I more dislike Ring of Lust for scrubbing off incest. Than for their dev mistake in scripting or repetitive/grindy mechanic.

Another example, however, is a game, not a VN, Straitened Times. - hard disagree here. Had no problems with Strained Times at all. The only thing you need, is a tip at what certain characters like during conversations and thats it. Again, this is just dev style. Not "crookedness".

You know what is actual "crookedness"? Its milking. Milking or paywalling. This is a real problem with some devs.

i prefer with walkthrough if it is to unlock and see all the content and no miss anything. If i can see all the scenes without a walkthrough, then i prefer to play without it.

I do so because I am lazy. I'm playing a VN for the content, not the process...maybe a little bit of process.

I prefer to use walkthroughs because I don't like miss scenes or anything,

Gimme a walkthrough any day. That said, many VNs don't really need them, being so linear. Those that do benefit from them tend to mess with my ADHD if I don't have a walkthrough enabled. At the end of the day, if it's simple enough to implement, then why not offer the choice or illusion thereof?

The one thing that DOES grind my gears by its absence is an option for automatic advance - it makes a playthrough so much smoother.

You should really play with the full version, but without it, you might miss out on some great scenes.
A dilemma 😣

I use a walkthrough mod when available. Burned too many times by seemingly random decisions resulting in missed scenes, and I'm not someone to play the same game over and over to get all the endings.

I don't want to miss scenes I would be interested in, so yeah, I use walkthrough mods when available.
