When a game has a really nice artist 2d is amazing, but for the most part 3D is more safe

3D all the way. there are some good 2D, but the quality of animation and renders are not comparable.

Animation is better (imho) for 3d but sometimes artwork can be spectacular in 2d especially for fantasy games
