A quick test to see if the writing and the images are decent and not just more slop garbage.. Then patiently hold until final. There are plenty of other games out there to enjoy.
Not following this rule burned me in multiple excellent games already that I regret not waiting for the final version.
if they look very good or are from creators i liked previous games, i play them immediately.
otherwise i usually wait around five to eight updates to see if they even get that far
Depends mostly on how much content there is on release. If it's really short and uneventful, I mostly wait. But if on release the game has a really good start of the story, I'll try it.
It depends, usually I check for reviews. Speaking of eroge specifically if it's a new release I look for what negative reviews critique since over 90% of them tend to have very big issues and mainly promise things "in the future" which will never happen. Positive reviews I've seen on 95 almost always rave about the "potential" of a game, not acknowledging how few games actually get anywhere near delivering on that.
I wait until the game is finished, the only ones that I would consider playing while in development would be games that are properly establised like Eternum or Being a Dik
It depends on the game, in most cases I regret not waiting, but there are also gems like Revenge of the Nerd, I played it for the first time when only two levels were available, later I played every new update, I think it's satisfying to watch live as the game develops.
Up until a little while ago I only ever played games with a completed tag. We have so many projects that never end that I want to save myself the frustration.
I've revised the rule a little bit, mostly because I was missing out on some amazing content, so now I'll make exceptions for games that have good reviews and plenty of content already.
I usually wait til the third or fourth release unless it's already quite big. If it takes me less than 30 minutes to get through it just doesn't feel worth the download.
For me in depends on the filesize of the game.
For example, i see a new Ren'py game i might like but see it has a filesize of 200mb,i already know there's not much content for now.
and sometimes you have a new release that's like 2gb,you know you can have fun for some time with it.
That works for me and i'm not disappointed when i reach the end of the current version after 5min of gameplay.
Some games I've been keeping up on, like The Null Hypothesis or Witch Trainer Silver, but that's because the progression of development is meaningful. They're adding new mechanics, changing how systems work, etc. A VN? Naw, I'll give whatever the latest release is a shot then stick in on a list to revisit once it finished.
i try to avoid playing demos or first releases due to how many games end up abandoned or stuck in development hell for months or even years, but if one looks interesting enough i am wiling to try them and then decide if i want to keep an eye on it or not.
