I name all my male characters Max or Maxwell (if I'm feeling fancy) and my female characters Maxine. I have an on going head canon about the spirit of Max/Maxine that possesses these seemingly happy families kills the dad or makes him never exist in the first place and turns the family into an incestuous hellscape or the female characters into sluts. The spirit of Max/Maxine is truly the oral sex demon that we once thought was fake. So yeah immersion is a bit fucked.
I never rename anyone (the MC is not me, his family is not my family, the game is not the story of my life, etc.) and it annoys me when the dev is too lazy to provide a default name. In cases like that I often name the MC something like Dipshit, or Dickon (the name of the MC from the first AVN I ever played, Long Live the Princess) or since 2020, Covid has become my go-to name for an unnamed MC. Then I get to continually roll my eyes reading discussion forums where players refer to LIs by whatever random-ass names they decided to apply in their own games and confuse the hell out of everyone...
Judging for the replies, the deciding factor is either you self insert or not.
I never self insert, for me these games is just like any other media: books, comics, animes, movies, games...
So I never name the character, unless required, and even so, when I have to, I don't use my name.
Not exactly what the thread is for, but I also prefer third person view in adult games. It kinda annoys me when the MC doesn't have a face, and that most certainly is tied to the self insert thing, too. Hahaha
LIs only if they have the name of a close relative (my mom's name luckily hasn't been popular since the 50s and pretty much not used since the 70s), or a weird one. If in the game it's a daughter a name I definitely wouldn't give a kid.
I don't really care, I tend to stick with the default names when given the option. The observation that this is directly tied to self-inserting seems to be spot on. I don't and never have. That's also why I don't mind playing female protagonists necessarily.
If there's an option I'll make the mc my name and change any other character's name if they share names with my family. Not a big deal if I can't though.
Well i do prefer to be able to change the name, but is not a must, altough i do get that are certain names that might make one feel uncomfortable, fortunately it hasn't been the case for me
Pretty important. But it is nice if the main screen shows their original name too since it's easy to forget them and then discuss about the characters in discord servers
I use 'MC' if i bother or am forced. It made me laugh when some game forced that name on me so I kept it. I don't change the other names cuz then it's hard to reference them to other people
