2 Years of Service
If I would have known that i would have kept posting yesterdayJust a tease to make you want it more and work harder... or a mistake by the admins (sshhh, admins don't make mistakes).
The new system has it's drawbacks (what system doesn't), however, I think it may have found more of a balance than just a one-time effort to gain access. Making users constantly engage and be active on the forums has benefits for the admins and owners as well. One of those would be activity level and active users for selling ads/banners on the site. Nobody is going to advertise/sponsor a website that has 30k members, and only 2k of them have more than a few hours of time on the site in their 2+ years of membership. Forum stats have gone way up in the past week, user time online, posts created, reactions to posts, etc.. All of these stats going up, and staying up, makes this a much more viable resource to sell ads/banners. Then the website could support itself, and not rely on donations/selling access.
This is step one towards this place being self-sustaining. The direction chosen from here, depends somewhat on us. Those of us that want access without engagement can buy it, generating money for the site, making it less likely we'll see ads/banners. Relying on and reminding everyone about donations every month is a chore, and not a stable, guaranteed, way to keep a website online. I can see a path towards, and fully support most methods of, making this place self-sustaining. If we want this place to be here next year, we need to look beyond our immediate wants.
Sorry for the rant. It is not aimed at anyone, just a few thoughts.
TL/DR: Active users help this place continue existing. Don't whine about maintaining/improving something you enjoy using.
