Continue making game or improve early chapters?

Maybe redo if something is really bad but otherwise more chapters with new content is better.

I think Devs that are still early in their careers should focus on making smaller episodic releases so that when their skill and craft improves they can move that to the next episode of their project or their next title. Actually, for porn games EVERYTHING should be smaller episodic releases so we don't end up with hundreds of VNs that are over 4GB each.

Remakes should only be considered when the project is finished. Any dev that feels the need to restart their whole project because they want to change something is taking big risks with the patience and goodwill of their fans and supporters.

I don't care that much about art remakes for most of the games. If I played it already it means the art was good enough. But a rework from a random engine to Renpy, all for it.
And for the love of god, please not another remake of Big Brother.

I hate remakes and remasters no matter the type of game. Just continue creating new content ffs. Don't dwell in the past.

Making new chapters, I don't remember one single case where the whole rework thing worked as it should.
The remake of the early chapters of Where the Heart Is has been very good. I normally don't like it when dev's remake early content, but Cheeky has also added a bunch of new material in the process.

This 100x over. If you update your old work, you will never finish and abandon it all together. Bug fixes are fine, but updates tend to add bugs and break saves. Be proud that you have improved and show in your next work how much better you are. How many movies today are improved and actually add anything other than a chance to charge again for mostly the same old material.

I honestly hate when devs decide to go back and 'remaster' their early chapters, they should definitely finish the VN first IMO.
I'm with you on this. VN should be finished first, but obviously show your new skills and improvements as the game develops. "Shut Up and Dance" is a good example of a game that is really enjoyable, but I got really pissed at not seeing the story being furthered due to remastering older chapters. At least the dev alternated between remaster, update, remaster, update etc.

Make new chapters. The fact that they want to go back a redo content is a good sign that they're improving their skills but it's making new material that's fueling the improvement so it's in their best interest to keep moving forward.

I'd rather he concentrated on new chapters
But if the remastered content also contains more story for later use, there's no choice.

Definitely making the game next. If you want to improve something, do it in the second part, as they do in regular games.

Continue making new chapters. Once the game if finish, they should improve it if they want, but I don’t think is ok to do it before.

First: Have your story ready before start coding.
Polish over and over. The most successful ones are those who the developer kept looking behind to clean any stain.
That is also real to any product you create in real life.
Don't deliver a product filled with wrinkles, it will stain your reputation, and it will take longer to regain it.

If the early parts of the game are built on bad code that then causes the later parts to crash and burn, then I certainly support going back and fixing the foundational stuff. But overall, constantly revisiting and remaking early parts of the game just end up sending it into a downward spiral of inevitable abandonment. Demonstrating how the author's writing and rendering skills have evolved is cool and rougher early sections let us see that artistic development. And I think every artist needs to learn to accept that their work isn't perfect and that completing a good piece is better than endlessly iterating upon an impossible masterpiece.

Make the beginning as strong as you can, but dont fall into the trap of remaking everything all over and over.

If there's bad coding, etc that it was required - that means the dev forgot (or didn't know) the 7 Ps
Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

I think a lot of people when asked this question forget about how absolutely burnt out you can get by just trucking along making new chapter after new chapter... And going back to work on some early chapters can be a really good way of avoiding burn out

That being said, I absolutely prefer new chapters over revamping old ones

I'm not sure if any. But I do know a few games that half way got updates to the past, best example is 'Summer's Gone'. It wasn't a success. It seems to be abandon now.

Most people want to continue with the story, not fixing old mistakes. And mostly it means removing scene's we loved...

I would suggest if you made a mistake, improve the mistake, but don't fix it in the past, fix it in the next update. So if you ever finish the game, you can update the past. But at least the chapter you are now putting out is continuing as if the mistake in the past was never made.

Of course you could over multiple updates, improve the past. But all those games that are into a few chapters, and then get totally rewritten most end up dead...
On the other hand, lots of games end up dead someday, because the dev didn't like it, or it didn't pay his bills.

I would suggest first creating the story in big lines before you start developing, because you need a handle in the future, you will get new ideas, about how things are done better. That's just human live. Still difficult. I think it's real craftsmanship if a dev can continue and finish a game.
