That only really holds up with certain Nintendo games, like Mario or Zelda, unlike modern Pokemon. Recent Pokémon games have been pretty buggy, and they don’t get bug fixes.

I heard about it, while i don't play the modern ones i know Game Freak has been a big stain on Nintendo game's quality for a while, buggy games, ugly and uninspired visuals and just overall poor quality, but people keep buying it, so that's part of the problem, but most first party games are awesome

Platformer love.

I’ve always found it a bit puzzling that people play Mario platformers purely for the single-player experience. To me, 2D platformers feel like something from an earlier era, back when technology was limited and developers couldn’t really build more complex types of games.

If a platformer has a strong story, I can see the appeal. You’re playing through it for the narrative. But with Mario, the story is pretty minimal, so I don’t really get why.

For metroidvanias, I can see why, which feel like a more evolved form of platforming with progression systems. Or even 3D platformers, where movement itself adds another layer of depth.

Straight 2D platformers just feel like something that belongs more in arcades to me. No offense to people who love them, it’s just not something that clicks for me.

I'm not a platformer fan anymore. At all. But back in the day (and likely still), the appeal was flow state. Same as a shooter when you're just in the zone, effortlessly flying through a level.

It's what you grew up with, who needs a story when you have fun game-play (fun is always relative).

Let me guess, your reflexes aren’t what they used to be? I can practically hear your knees creaking from here

It’s all good though. Unlike you, I never really had great reflexes to begin with, so I’ve always been pretty bad at platformers.

I do enjoy FPS games, though, just mostly single-player, and usually the classic ones like Doom, Duke Nukem, and Shadow Warrior.

The hands and the eyes do start to go lol. It's also about time/attention investment. Much more casual gaming while doing other things. Click a few buttons, build stuff, let it run, monitor... different vibe, different kind of fun. Zero interest in a game trying to "challenge" me, I prefer creating my own challenges/playstyles.

Talking about the PS2, good thing i'm re-building my library back

Did you see the project to revive the original Duke Nukem forever?

I have a bit of a love–hate relationship with how my tastes change as I get older. On one hand, I like that I’m growing and starting to appreciate things I never used to. It feels like a kind of maturity. But on the other hand, it sucks that I can’t connect with some of the things I used to love. It almost feels like losing small pieces of myself over time.

And sure, you could say that’s just natural, my preferences evolving, not something external forcing the change.

But what if it’s not just taste? What if I still like those things, but I just can’t enjoy them the same way anymore? Like when reflex-heavy games stop being fun because your reactions aren’t what they used to be. It’s not that the interest is gone. Your body just can’t keep up.

That feels a lot more depressing to me. It’s like a guitarist with Parkinson’s who still loves music but can’t physically play anymore. That kind of disconnect hits harder than simply growing out of something.

No Parkinsons, but I very much am that guitarist in my own way. Some stuff I just don't attempt. Sometimes it's not even fun to play. Part of aging (and any change, really) is grieving what you no longer have. Even to the point of handing over the world to the young, metaphorically and actually. We had our time to be one thing, now it's a time to be another.

Yeah, I’ve heard about it, pretty exciting stuff.

Honestly, the only good thing that came out of the whole Duke Nukem Forever disaster for me was the Duke Nukem girls… especially the twins.

Good thing we still have people uploading playthroughs on YouTube. So even if you can’t physically play anymore, you can still watch them and get a bit of that experience.

What are some things you’ve come to enjoy more as your tastes have matured? Like getting into philosophical books perhaps? For me, I’ve started to enjoy more text-heavy RPG video games since my attention span’s improved with age.

You’re talking to the wrong person when it comes to kinetic novels. I really can’t stand them, especially the ones with zero choices where it’s just click, click, click. They might have a great story, but at that point I’d honestly rather just watch someone else play through it than sit there clicking and reading myself.

I know the spoilers for Doki Doki though, the way it suddenly shifts tone is such a huge whiplash that it basically became a meme.

Completely agree on youtube. Whether speedruns, high-level League of Legends play, etc. Lot of gaming content that I'm glad exists, but only want to watch lol. Funny you mention long rpg's and attention span. I'm actually much less likely to delve into one game for a long time. Whether learning systems, getting good at mechanics, or just playing through 100hrs of an amazing rpg. Nah, gimme a roguelike, something turn-based, something I can play for an hour every day for a week, then forget about for a few months, come back to and be able to pick up right where I left off. As far as taste in general.... I'm an atypical person overall. Lucked into good taste, big ideas, etc when I was young. If anything, it's about appreciating things on new levels with repeated exposure. Books, movies, music, whatever. Same taste, just... deeper? And with more of a knowledge base to apply. It's one thing thinking about philosophy over bong rips when you're young, another once you've actually done the homework plus lived experience.

Sometimes I feel like my parents must be cheating or something… how else do I keep meeting strangers who feel so similar to me, like long-lost brothers?

I guess you still like the same media but now you’re rediscovering it with a new kind of appreciation. That’s actually pretty nice.

It’s different for me, though. I’ve lost my love for a lot of the things I used to enjoy when I was younger.

So what, were you never really “immature” to begin with? Is that why you don’t feel that shift from liking more immature things to appreciating more mature ones now?

I suppose that's basically it, yeah. Again, not knocking "immature stuff", people like what they like. But yeah, I was a different kind of kid lol

I’m the complete opposite—I like games that are quite challenging, ones that require learning, experimenting, reading, and failing before you can truly master them. That’s why one of my favorite genres is colony simulation, where even small planning mistakes or ignorance of the game mechanics can lead to everyone dying.

Even in RPGs, I love skill trees and customizable builds. I adore the skill tree in Path of Exile (especially in PoE2), and I even love simpler ones like the one in Guild Wars 2, not to mention the one in Skyrim with the Ordinator mod.

That whole sense of improvement that comes from learning is something I adore and that has been lost over time in more modern games. Learning to do something in the game not because you unlock a skill but because you learned through trial and error is wonderful. Like learning to parry in Dark Souls—it’s not an unlockable skill; it’s something you can do right from the start, but it requires practice.
In colony simulators, that’s taken to the extreme, which is why I love them.

And even though I sound like a hardcore player who loves a challenge, I actually prefer laid-back games—going at my own pace and doing things the way I like. That’s why you won’t see me playing a lot of multiplayer games; even though I really like MMORPGs, I usually play solo without looking for clans or groups.

Oh colony management, strategy, simulation... those are VERY much my jam. X-com, Rimworld, Subnautica, Factorio, etc... Good good shit. So many hours, just spread out over a long time lol. I just don't learn through brutal trial/error. I start on easy, get completely familiar with the system and all its parts, then figure out my own difficulty/challenge. Perfect run savescumming can be very chill and a lot of fun. It's all just legos to me.
