fun story, I was talking about animes back in the day with a schoolmate, mentioned this one, he blew my mind when he told me it was Yaoi/BL, had no idea
People hate to admit it, but everyone knows a little bit of homo eroticism is the key to great art. Ever see the statue of David?

Well, if everyone knows...
That explains why Digimon directors put a lot of Taichi and Yamato scenes...

I had never realized that...

I think it's much more complicated than that, considering all the great art that contains clothed people, or no males, and even no people. Michelangelo's David is less homoerotic and more idealized; it seems to me to be more a celebration of the human form in a way that was permissible by the contemporary Church (and perhaps Michaelangelo's own beliefs) because it was regarding a Biblical story. Donatello's several Davids are more dynamic and story-like, but are nearly the equal in 'greatness', as is Bernini's. None of those do more than whisper homoeroticism to me, if at all, even if Michelangelo's does. Rodin's the thinker, Bernini's Propserine (and Pluto) and his Apollo and Daphne all seem more about perfecting the human form and telling the story than about eroticism.

The vast majority of the audience would have definitely paid attention to the nakedness, humans have not changed about sensuality and thinking in recorded history, but the statues weren't about being gay; they were about being 'perfect'.

Oh yeah for sure the statues were about representing the perfect human form, I think that's pretty well documented. You can certainly raise an eyebrow at just how much attention to detail those dudes were paying to sculpting other dudes, but most often those same sculptors were sculpting women with just as much detail. I'm quite certain that there were plenty of gay artists back in the day, but some folks tried to appreciate the male form without being attracted to it.

I have no idea how many artists are gay now, let alone 500 years ago. But I know that if I had practiced at painting and sculpture that I'd be interested in many subjects for artistic reasons. I'm only interested in my own penis and yet I'm confident that if I had the skill to represent my understanding of the male form in a statue, I'd still put the penis on if I were making a nude, and make the statue to the best of my ability.

Being gay is not important to art: it doesn't make it better or worse unless the art is somehow about being gay. The vast majority of art has not been about being gay, no matter the sexuality of those making it.

Absolutely, it would be kinda weird if most art was about being gay (barring modern Netflix originals. Pretty common there). Most "everything is actually gay" comments are just people memeing. Calling everything gay for no reason is just funny sometimes lol.
