my dog understands more English words than i understand dog words. we clean up their poop and feed them for free. who really in charge ?

The cats

Dogs at least had to work for a living. We bred them mainly to assist in hunting. Being purely pets or accessories is relatively new

Cats are effective at rodent control. A few years ago, my cat died, and it wasn't that long after that a mouse chewed open the top of a container of linseed oil in the basement. I had not had any problems before that because the cats kept them away. I now have another cat, and she does a very good job of keeping mice away.

I did think about that in my original post, but my point was more we didn't really need to breed cats to do pest control, they are kinda good at that on their own. Meanwhile, we have very selectively bred various traits into dogs for different purposes.
