"It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first."

The irony of that quote is that it was made by a politician.
If you believe the Bible, it's marketing and was started by Satan himself in the Garden. "Just eat it - it's good for you - nothing bad will happen!"

And it's only gotten worse since.

It's the humidity that really matters. 94F at 100% humidity will literally kill you. Something like 130F at 0%. If you can't sweat and have it evaporate you are fucked.
Yeah it's always gonna depend on a bunch of factors, wind speed, geography, etc.

While I think that everyone that is a fan of Tolkien from one direction or the other should both read the books and watch the LotR movies, I'm torn on what direction one should go. I normally suggest books first, but, in this case, movies first wouldn't be a bad way to go, especially since you already have them.
Dunno, I find the books overrated, the story is obviously fantastic, but his writing style is just... meh honestly.
LotR is one of the few, if not the only, IP were the Movies are straight up superior to the books in my opinion, the only reason to read the books at all for me is the content/characters/ect that the movies left out, but I can see someone not reading the books at all and would say that that isn't a big loss.

That would make sense why some Christian religions denounce politics.

All I know is that November better hurry up and get here before I lose my mind due to all the political ads.

Tolkien was good at lore and world crafting but his literary writing skills were pretty lacking.

Calling it a night. Hope you all have a good day or night. Talk to you all later.

Part of it, just like Shakespeare, is the writing styles have changed.

Hell, in the past twenty years the way we communicate is so vastly different. Forums such as this have disappeared and you get reddit, facebooks, and discord.

I honestly prefer the bulletin board style so much more.

Not his writing style but his writing skills. Even in his time Tolkien's writing skills were viewed as a bit amateurish because he wasn't a writer, he was a linguist.

I had a discussion on that topic recently!
The apple was from the tree of WISDOM. So how were Adam and Eve supposed to understand the folly of their own actions?
Because a disembodied voice (or human figure) told them not to?
How would they know that a talking snake was bad? He would have had to tell them first. He didn't
So, it was a set-up. God bamboozled Adam and Eve for the pleasure of treating them as sinners.

Just switched phone companies and I feel like Verizon sent all the campaigns my number and told them to start sending everything.
I used to get 2-5 per week. Now I'm getting at least 2 per day.

Me, too. That's why I yap so much, I think.
A little nostalgia with conversation.
Anybody still have Yahoo Instant Messenger?

Yeah, well, tbh, I am not versed enough to know if his style and skills were good or bad or what was common in the 30s and 40s when he wrote them. I read them in 2006/07 I think and just thought that his writing was really lacking and not engaging *shrug* :D
Doesn't subtract from the fact the world building and all is great and that LotR is a fantasy classic of course :D

Well I don't really care about all of that on a personal level, is more of a general dissatisfaction with the way some "Products" are being handled today, but that's more of a personal point of view.

What I'm really against is that they try to make us like something, and if we don't then we're are homophobic or whatever, take for example what you said about the little mermaid, why do they made the mermaid black?, and I'm talking about a logical and justifiable reason about it, as the original book was based on a white woman with red hair, made by a Danish autor on a country that doesn't normally have black people being born on it, if the wanted to make movie about a black mermaid why the didn't made a new movie not related to the little mermaid?.
Disclaimer = I'm an evil, old, psychopathic fuck. So, modern day cancel culture buzzword shaming doesn't mean a FLYING FUCK to me.

That said, even I got the point. A lot of stories were told when there was a predominance of old, cis, het, white males as characters, with young, cis, het, white, females at supporting characters. Now, they're just changing demographics for financial reasons. It's always the $. No more. No less.

If the mighty God (DOLLAR) said 1950s dance numbers with an all white cast brought in the dough... that's what we'd be getting.
Either way, though, fuck both sides for telling me what to think, say or do... and using 1984 as a how-to-book.

Until they make a series of movies and TV shows about MY chosen demographic: MURDERHOBOS as PROTAGONISTS in a POSITIVE LIGHT... I couldn't care less either way.

BONUS POINTS if you know about murderhobos without looking it up.

That's a much nicer way of saying it than what I said.

Rutger Hauer is "Hobo with a Shotgun"
Give me mah points!

Really? I haven't received a single campaign call. I wonder if that's because I put my number on the federal no call list that was offered a long time ago. Although I know my parents put their numbers on it and my mom says she receives automated calls from one of our senators. She had dealings with his office in the past so I figured she received them because she was on some kind of constituent info list.

We were talking about the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Oh my bad!! Sorry, that's what I get for jumping in sometimes. I retraced my steps and it seems I misread a Hobbit post that kikomascado made prior to your discussion and I got the wrong trilogy in my head. Mea culpa.

That said -if I can try for a redemption shot- I concur with you. Definitely watch the LOTR Extended Trilogy!! I might enjoy reading 30 pages on Ents singing the names of animals, but if you don't those movies are a great way to go :)

But since I love cartoons so much, just think about... The Best of 1978!
