AI Art in Games - Discussion Thread

Whatever ends up happening with AI, I don't want to be it tied to the internet. Give me a standalone AI story/picture generator that creates its stories/pictures just for me, I don't want some company gathering data about my personal habits and using that data for God knows what.

It throws a little something different into all the reused models that are common between games.

I think it depends. AI does a lot of things mediocrely including some images. If the author can keep the images in line and a consistent theme between them in the game then I think they work. When they're random images that don't fit the context they do not work.

I despise AI art in its current form. Most games just throw whatever images they get straight in without checking the quality, so you end up with a bunch of cgs of one character that looks similar enough that you can recognize the character but different enough that you mistake them for two different entities. It just stands out too much and I can't enjoy any game that uses AI art.

I feel ai in smaller games like the average visual novel is ok. It gives writers/game designers a bit more freedom to create something. I feel that they should still give it special care and touch ups to make the art less jarring. And perhaps if a game does well replace it at a later time. But for proof on concept type stuff it would be good.

AI is a fantastic tool, and a great clutch for solo dev's.
But it does have its issue's, especially if the user doesn't take the care or the small little time it takes to actually clean it up.

The main thing I dislike about AI art is when a character looks completely fine while going through the game. the art is nice and consistent, without the uncanny (obviously AI) look that most low-effort AI porn has, but then you get to a sex scene and see that the genitals are a mutilated mess.
It's not that I really mind AI art in theory, it's just that based on everything I've seen, the tools developers use for their porn games either don't know how humans look, or aren't used carefully enough to ensure the result looks natural.

I'm one of those Cretans that like the look of AI art, I think the women look hot, and more importantly, I think using that tech opens up whole new possibilities for games to be created with interesting settings or situations. By now I'm sure a lot of you have seen those "1950's Super Panavision 70" video's pop up on your YouTube feed (if you haven't, copy/paste the quoted line and watch a couple to get an idea what I'm talking about). I'm thinking a porn game that could do AI GIFs as good as what's done in those videos could do really well, not all the art would need to be a GIF, just the scenes where movement would make the most sense.

TBF, I'm not thinking of games created ENTIRELY through AI like those YT video's, ChatGPT would be nowhere near the type of game I'd be interested in playing, (maybe in the future, I just don't think it's there yet), but I think there's an opportunity for an AI artist or game dev to create a new game that's different from what we've all seen over and over again. I remember one game I saw recently (I can't remember the name, it was either here or on another site) that had AI GIF's, but I didn't think the GIFs were done very well, nowhere near the level of those "1950's" videos, so I didn't look into it further than reading the comments about how strange the art looked.

So I was wondering, has anyone seen any porn games trying to use this same type of AI GIF technology, and do you think there's a future for games like that?

I've seen a couple games that used AI postprocessing on some normal porn to deepfake the models, and the results were very uncanny and offputting

They are all new TOOLS to enhance existing talent. Just like auto-tune, if its used a crutch, its can be horrific... if used a slight enhancement (like any vocal effects) if can add so much to song.

Synthesizers had a similar journey.

Or, look at drum machines... we are now in a place where musicians WANT that old 808 rythym machine sound. In the beginning, most people hated it.

I'm not really fond of the AI in VNs these days. The characters are almost always the same, and the animations aren't quite good enough yet.
"Pill King" might stand out.

AI games arent my cup of tea, dosnt help that I really dont like all that stuff with AI because all the push big companies make and all the bad stuff related with them. Is true that you can make good stuff with it but it really push me back, but if there is some game that someone recomend that have good quality I can try it.

There are two main problems: consistency and lack of personality.
Games require a set of resources and there is mastery in making that set consistent with itself. AI-generated images tend to deviate between each other.
But even with those deviations - AI art tends to be very same-y. Same facial expressions, same poses, same body types. Artists tend to consciously avoid that sort of thing, infusing their art with personality.
