Another thing is the AAA game studios wouldn't touch it, as it would cause protests by the religious nuts and hurt sales of their mainstream games some (the religious nuts probably don't get those for their kids either - their kids are basically only allowed to read the bible and often don't even have TVs. Lots don't allow them internet, either.) They'd be worried any profit from the game would be offset by loss of profit from their mainstream games. And imagine how fucked up the games would be by ones like EA that basically sell beta releases...

AAA porn games won't happen anytime soon. Some studios will probably follow the lead of studios like CD Projekt Red, and we'll see more adult content in games in the future. No studio would ever go for a full porn game though because of the risk of publishers/card companies dropping it. Credit card companies are massive puritans, so they would prefer violence over sex.

I think it depends on where you are somewhat. Japan be making its version of them. A lot of Western countries have taboo views about sex so there's no way their publics would be good with it.

It's hard enough for people to make serious money off actual porn these days, I don't see there being any investors willing to put up tens of millions to make a porn game.

Several AAA have already taken down content to get a slightly lower indicative rating, I can't see the same guys coming close to straight porn.

As much as how amazing it would be, especially with the latest motion capture tech we have. It would never happen. Too much risk, no market, and impossible to advertise. Shareholders would also not be down with any of that either. Like Adult VNs itself are such a small niche compared to the whole gaming landscape

Seems like making good old porn is still the way to go. Making games is too much hassle. And the idea that games are for kids is still in too many heads to not invite trouble with porn games.

No, in recent years puritanism is increasing, not decreasing. I don't see any of the triple A studios touching outright porn with a ten foot pole. Will be interesting to see how daring Dragon Age will still manage to be, I don't think Mass Effect would have been published the same way today. Consider how much hot coffee water GTA got in just because of something that wasn't even officially supposed to be part of the game, while all the violence is seen as fine.

The only possible exception may have been CD Projekt RED once upon a time, but even there it has been comical how success tamed and tempered them. Compare Witcher 1 to 2 to 3. Cyberpunk 2077 has grown to be a decent game, but also really disappointing in how much it held back on sex compared to violence. Downtown Tokio or LA feels raunchier than the supposed City of Sin.

Pretty much what the guy above said. For a AAA porn game to even have a chance to go out, there must be a cultural shift where the puritans (both in the woke and the conservative camps) lose relevancy.

Generally, triple AAA are ex studios with successful ip or game bought up by companies like EA then funded by investors to increase the scope of the game. Getting funding for unknown ip is close impossible without some heavy ero-game dev background.

There are no such games, or dev teams. Considering it takes many years to develope too.

Demand is there for sure though, people are already paying triple AAA prices through patreon or in steams by buying multiple chapter's on "simple" visual novel. It might not only be like 1/4 of fantasy or rpg sale for example, but the median profit of all the adult games is like top 5.

It has definitely been crazy to see the numbers some of these projects are raking in. I think what actually could lead to at least AA games is how the future of the big AAA studios pans out, currently shit looks on fire due to ever increasing team sizes and budgets. That doesn't look sustainable, and some studios are already collapsing under their weight. Between all the fallout, this may result in some studios splitting up or scaling back to smaller teams working on multiple, but smaller projects (like Ori), and I could see some risks being taken there. But even more, it may result in new small A/AA teams forming under new names, and those may finally dare take some risks to set them apart from the existing EA/Ubisoft status quo.
