* BIRD NERD ALERT*
Them little blue buggers are getting very teritorial at the moment in my garden. There's a pair who have claimed the bird box on the shed and now think everything belongs to them. Anything smaller then them that tries to get on the seed feeders end up having a very bad time which is a shame as I'm rather fond of the long tailed tits and they're not getting much of a look in at the moment.

I'm waiting for one of them to make a mistake and think they can have a pop at a robin. That will be the day they know they fucked up!

Well, not D at least not for me, it kinda hurts my eyes looking at it.
Hmmmm.
I do think the one you have now, stands out more.
B could be a close second, so it's a contrast of dark on light.

I'd say A, honestly. The muted red makes the eyes pop more than the reddish orange on B, but contrast the head and is less messy looking than C

I like B, I think the stronger silhouette gives it 'jazzhandsability'

In my case it's not so much the smaller birds acting all pushy at my bird feeders -- I have a problem with hawks discovering a whole new meaning to the term bird "feeder" Lunch time can be traumatic

Brutal, but they are gorgeous though. I don't get too many birds of prey, just the occasional sparrowhawk and the rare opportunistic buzzard if the woodpegeons are out in force.

Edit: And a tawney owl. Invisible by day, loud shrieking harbinger of doom by night.

Alright, that brings down C and D, so I'll check what changes I could make both the eyes and the silhouette stand out more (will probably test more on changing the color of the face details as well)

I will say, I think a muted less saturated color would be the way for the background to go because it really adds vibrancy to the eyes, ear ring, and grin. A nice colorful mid tone that balances things out, and makes the bright tones of the features stand out more than an equally bright background
