I used to have an office mate who when faced with situations like that would bring an identical jacket to work, hang it on the back of his chair - and go home. Whenever anyone came looking for him, if asked I would just say he was in another office, in the canteen , in the bathroom and so on. He did eventually get caught and terminated , but it worked for 3 or 4 years.

I think there are four things at work here

1. They simply think you are joking - you are after all - a Mime
2. They feel that begging from a Mime is counter intuitive as most mimes they have seen are street performers who are themselves essentially begging.
3. For some people they feel the need to earn everything on their own.
4. And lastly there are those who are scared of what you will have them do for it.
