And yet, they are still both gay.
As with many other words, there is an specific female version but no male only word, I wonder why the language police don't address this?

I mean... there are plenty of words for male gay. They just don't like many of them.

You're incorrect in thinking "gay" is an all encompassing label, it's not despite being used as such. The broad label is homosexual for both sexes. Then there's faggot, which also applies to both sexes, is hilarious and most deserving but, you know.

, gay and homosexual mean the same and are interchangeable in this context, even though gay has more meanings and is, objectively, a better more happy and bright word.
Even though gay is nowadays used more frequently to refer to men, it's because women have their own word and you either use the general term or gtfo because they are going to complain to you very loudly.

A very easy to see and understand example I sneakily stole:
-A woman can say: "I am a lesbian".
-A man cannot say: "I am a gay".
-Both can say: "I am gay"
Both may be a "gay" person, but only women have a gender specific name/noun for them.

This reminds me of the stupid argument of mankind vs womankind:
-The term man (from Proto-Germanic *mann- "person") and words derived from it can designate any or even all of the human race regardless of their sex or age.
-The word is actually derived from the Old English compound "wyf man", with "wyf" used in Old English for both married and unmarried women.
