With 3D games I especially feel that a lot of people don't experiment enough with visuals. They take something very stiff with no lighting effects at all. You get this very plastic looking character stiffly walking around in a completely flat, unlit looking environment. Lighting alone can do a lot for visuals. I understand that 3D is a lot harder to do, but if you spend enough time on it and learning new things you can get something a lot nicer looking.
