What unsolicited advice would you give to porn game devs?

In fact, don't do sandbox unless it's open world. Having to find the right place to go just to advance is a pain in the ass.
Nightmirror made a good post explaining why sandboxes suck on VN.
Quoting:
"
Sandboxes, why I hate them, and why I took it out.

tldr; most porn games don't really have sandboxes, they have boring grinds that waste my time.

There is no tag (well, maybe Scat (if you like it, that's fine, but not my thing)) that will make me click away faster from a game other than Sandbox. A game needs to have something truly special to make me endure the pain of a sandbox. But why do I dislike them so much? Simple, in most porn games, they aren't sandboxes, they are a boring grind of randomly clicking around (or following a guide, in or out of game) until the story decides to happen.

First, what is a sandbox? If you've only played porn games you might think it's clicking from room-to-room, wandering around until the story finally slaps you in the face. And, that isn't a sandbox at all. That's a wandering mechanic (I think popularized by " "? and just copied over and over into every game since). So what's the difference?

Let me change the representation to help paint a clearer picture of what's really going on. Rooms/locations are just an affectation, at the end of the day, what's really happening is that the player is clicking on menu options. Some options take you to more menus with more buttons, some options take you to events.

In an actual sandbox game, most of those buttons will take you to an event (even if it's not the event you were looking for). Yes, some will still go to "sub" menus to do things like "navigate" or "manage", but most of the time clicking the button will launch an event, or give the player an interesting choice. And that event usually won't require that you have clicked lots of other buttons or watched other events first. There can still be story progression, but these are usually self contained, with maybe the occasional influence.

A good example of an actual sandbox porn game would be something like " ", or " ". Where the player can (at least try and) take the actions they want, without being required to do non-related events first.

In most porn "sandbox" games that is not the case. Most menu buttons don't do anything, they have no events or choices at all behind them, or they tell you to click some other button first. Instead of making interesting choices, and playing just the parts of the game you want, you're still playing a mostly liner game that either gives the illusion of choice, or forces you down a specific path. Want to see this character's next story scene? Well, maybe go talk to all her friends first and do their scenes, then come back. That's simply not a sandbox, but that's what most "sandbox" porn games do.

Or, a simpler example: let's say we have 30 buttons to click. 10 navigate and the other 20 all launch an event or choice. That's a sandbox. Have 30 buttons again, and again 10 navigate, but this time only 3 buttons launch an event or choice, one of which requires you to have click one of the other of those 3 buttons first, and the other 17 buttons don't do anything. That's a wandering game.

"" by Ferdafs, falls into the porn game "sandbox-like" sand-pit of a wandering game. You can't just do one character's story, you MUST do other events first to advance, and a lot of clicks just don't do anything at all (I'm not talking about bugs, I mean when the game is working as intended). Summer is a good example of this in that you HAVE to do things with Tricia first before her story even starts.

And, that was my issue (well, one of many issues, but specifically on topic here the sandbox issue) with the original game. The wander mechanic is fun maybe the first or second time you do it, then it's just a chore. It's not an activity I ever looked forward to doing, and it was never that different from the last time I had to do it. To quote one of my favorite review lines: "You should never, ever, ever, reach that point where you're like 'eh I'll check it later' in a game about checking rooms!" And that's the wandering mechanic in a nutshell. I never want to do it. I have to do.

So a liner game is the solution, right?! That's why I ripped out the "sandbox" stuff an stomped on until I broke my foot? Eh, it's got its own design problems. In place of that wandering mechanic, there is more dialogue to help ease scene transitions, arguably more clicks in most cases. I am stuffing a square peg into a round hole, the story wasn't designed with linearity in mind. While I got it to mostly fit, it's not perfect and does have some issue with the order of a few events, as well as some abrupt transitions. But I would argue it has at least four big advantages:

First, there is no looking for the story, it's all there, you'll see everything.

Second, you don't have to waste hours trying to find the right button to click to take the next step.

Third, things can happen in a much more logical order (for the most part). You're not suddenly confronted by a girl who says she will never ever let you fuck her, right after the scene where you fucked her.

And fourth, it lets events be even more connected because the order they are seen is fixed. We don't need to worry (for the most part) if another event happened or not, and what influence it has on the current event.

Is it perfect, no. Is is better, I would say yes, but a lot of that comes down to personal opinion. If you enjoy the wander mechanic, by all means enjoy it! Don't let some random person on the internet tell you what to like. Am I ever going to put it back in this game? Fuck no."

1) Choose your platforms carefully. If you're doing loli incest content, don't go to patreon.
2) List your current tags and ALL planned tags as early as possible.
3) If you are adding content that is a lot more niche (scat for example), allow players to opt out.
4) A poorly implemented stat system is worse than no stat system.
5) Don't make significant changes to content types halfway through the game. For example, don't suddenly make a vanilla game about wooing the love of your life a game about getting NTR'd by a Saint Bernard.
6) Accept constructive criticism from your playerbase.
7) Take care of yourself.

just go watch actual porn if that's your strike zone
Yeah, I want a GAME - that's why I hate kinetic novels. Porn isn't interactive.

Yeah, and get your shit together before starting so you don't have to fuck with some variable so old saves don't work. Once it's started don't rework from the start. That gets patrons to drop.
Oh and do NOT, under any circumstances, use RPGmaker or HTML. Learn to render - no using real porn.

You are not prime M Night Shyamalan and your game does not have a shocking twist. Your game's overview should give players an idea of what they're getting into, not be left annoyingly vague to maintain some sense of "mystery" that gets dispelled after 5 minutes of playing.

Include basic quality of life features. If you have a sandbox game, make sure there's an indication of where NPCs are and when players reach the end of content. If you're using RPGM as the engine give players a teleport or fast travel option. For VNs and CYOAs have keyboard shortcuts (preferably ones players can map themselves) to allow one handed playing. These kinds of features go a long way to preventing frustration and keep players coming back for more.

Don't be afraid of less than perfect, unique, character models. I find the girls from Light Of My Life much hotter than the basic DAZ models that populate every other 3DCG game to upload.

Also, don't make a kinetic novel. It's not a game.

I'm pretty sure M Night Shyamalan was only in his prime for one movie, lol. So no, please don't be that. If you're gonna put loli in, keep it in. Don't suddenly decide "Well, my donations are gonna get messed with" and take it out. Spend a long time making your story before you even begin to make the game. If you get halfway through the game and then decide you don't like the story or character development, you're gonna screw it up. And for the sake of the porn Gods, don't make another damned Lessons in Love copy and change the location and names.

I think it was more "I might get sent to prison" than "my donations are gonna get messed with." Fucking Australia.

For most of them it's Patreon/SubscribeStar dumping them. The Australia case and the idiot that did Sensei Overnight are the only two that I can recall actually resulted in legal issues. And the moron who did Sensei Overnight actually earned his cell.

Don't know about that one, but Patreon is getting worse - it bans a shit ton more than Loli. Like probably what the majority of the games even on Fuck95 are without patches.

Yeah I know about the craziness of Patreon. It seems they're very choosy about which games they go after, even if multiple games have the same content.

Some pretty great advice in here, but I see a lot of subjective stuff in here as well.
One piece of advice I'd give is that it's better to make your game in your native language if you're not fluent enough to release it in English. Bad spelling and grammar can turn any serious game into a comedy and will turn people off completely.

And in my opinion, please for the love of God, don't do multiple piece of dialogue during sex scenes where it's just written moans and an "I'm cumming!". I'd rather have no text at all and let the scene speak for itself.

Few great xxx scenes in every update is better than a lot of mediocre ones

Don't expect to make money, if you do, you will fail.
Don't cater to the masses, a game that's for everybody won't please anybody.
Keeping a game alive as long as you can just to make money is the death of its creativity and its heart, make a new game, you apparently already have the fellowship.
People need money to eat or pay bills, i understand completely your point but don't expect devs being original when people pirate their games or don't get enough recognition

It's a good mentality to a certain point.
For example, when you go out with the intention of getting laid and you just focus on that, the results are atrocious. On the other hand, you go out to have fun, and surprise, people are naturally attracted to you when you are not salivating and chasing people. That, and enjoying the moment, will unironically get you laid.

Advice that a college professor gave my class: if you want to get better at writing, read everything you can get your hands on. Not just fiction or non-fiction. Don't limit yourself to one genre. Read as much as you can. It gives you more viewpoints and styles of writing. You never know where inspiration or guidance will come from.

I would like to say to game developers... "Don't give up!!!"

Look into all the financial support platforms! If you have something worth developing stick with it! Ask for those subscriptions... Your not going to get them from everyone, but unless you work towards allowing people to donate... you won't get that!

And if you simply can't continue, please consider providing your work for someone else to continue! There will always be people that love your work! don't let it go abandoned!

Stop reworking/remaking the game just a few updates before it's supposed to be complete. If you want to, then do it after as a sort of Remastered/v.2 edition type of deal.

Don't later add stuff that a number of people hate without letting people know it will be there from the start. Shit like futa/trap/etc, ntr, scat, monstergirl, etc.

if the game or avn your making releases every few months make sure you make weekly or monthly updates on your patreon or whatever platform you use and let people know your still working on it and what is currently being done don't ghost for months than release

You're not writing the next Great American Novel. Keep the text to a reasonable level.
Also, avoid the following:
Graphics - Koikatsu, cartoonish hand drawn
engines - RPGmaker, HTML
things - too much teasing, futa, ntr, sandbox
Kinetic novel. A kinetic novel is NOT a game, no matter what the fucktards at Fuck95 say.
