Of course, a compelling story is my main criterion for sticking with a game. While it may not be essential just to start playing, a game is still a time investment, so storytelling and emotional engagement are key factors for me. That said, the quality of the writing matters greatly—a good story can be undermined far more by weak writing and poor pacing than by subpar graphics. And, of course, for games that rely on gameplay, it should fall within a range I find acceptable—neither impossibly difficult nor overly grindy.

I think a good story should go hand in hand with good gameplay. If I had to choose one, I would choose gameplay. A good story is needed in VNs, but I don't really like them, I'd rather read a book instead.

Absolutely. I am always "story first, gameplay second". Though it arguably makes for a better game if the gameplay is just as engaging as the story.
