I don't know why this is a thing, but it seems like every fucking game has a scene where you take some girl or girls shopping and they try on clothes, and you sneak a peek at them changing or you get to help them choose which outfit to buy, whatever.

Don't get me wrong, I get the the exhibitionist aspect, but there are SO MANY GAMES that seem to have changing room scenes. Is this just a fetish I'm not aware of?

I gotta let you in on a secret. We're not really supposed to talk about this but it's time you knew:

Most AVN devs aren't very original. Same reason a few thousand games start with the MC coming home from college to his lonely mom, mean older sister, and adoring younger sister. Same reason fatherhood is lethal in VN-world. Same reason literally every VN character's mother does yoga and drinks wine every night until she passes out on the couch, and none of them have working bathroom locks.

The devs want to include scenes with the good stuff in their game- or, at least, to include some T&A so the players don't start whining about how it's three updates in and the MC hasn't creampied his sister already. Changing room scenes are a cheap and easy way to squeeze in some boobs at minimum, and maybe show off some alternate outfit models the dev's made up, and a lot of devs just don't seem to have a more original idea so it's the easiest thing to fall back on. It works, there's assets for it, players don't seem to mind.

Fortunately for your average VN protagonist, every clothing store in the multiverse is the same tiny storefront with zero other customers, staffed solely by a single hot cashier who wants the D only slightly less than his little sister does.

It all rings true though. A few of the early popular games (BB comes to mind) featured a scene like that and certainly it became all the rage. Incidentally, that same game featured a mom with two daughters (i.e. MC's older and little sisters), a mom who did yoga, ..., you get the picture. BB pretty much defined a genre and countless games after it have tried to copy it to some extent, hoping to catch its magic and popularity. Of course, not unlike the recent example of Concord, these games are a bit late to the party and very few of them are unique enough to stand on their own and have some measure of success.

it's a thing, because it's a fun to have your character start being corrupted by their lust to see the love interest changing her clothing

Tropes get used in various media because their easy and they work they become a design language of their own and people come to recognize what they signify both emotionally and visually. Most porn game developers aren't trying to reinvent the wheel here so while they're making their own games they reach for what they've seen other developers do that's been successful. Thus you get changing room scenes and an MC with no father and lonely mom an older sister that's a bitch and younger sister who's a brat and all the other various tropes. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that developers use these tropes as they can be a pretty useful way to quickly get across what you might expect to get out of certain scenes or to set a mood the. Problem arises when games start to literally only be these tropes with no actual creativity or new concepts expressed but coming up with new ideas is hard so you end up getting lots of these game that all feel the same

Pretty much this. You can say the same for yoga scenes and shower scenes. These are assets that are readily available to prospective devs wanting to make a vn/game.

Same goes for character models. There's lots of overlap when it comes to any asset.

Ever notice how many big breasted models go around wearing boob socks? Everyone works within their own limitations. Not everyone is capable of bringing something new to the scene.....

It's one of the many low hanging fruit/tropes where MC and the girl you want to see naked are forced into a scenario where it's possible to put the girl in a compromising position. You'll find that you also play spin the bottle/truth or dare, have the girl fall on you in a way that she lands with her ass right in your face, or that she sits in such a way that makes it easy for you to look up her skirt without her noticing, despite her being quite meek and reserved.

Its a good place where you can see the models change outfits and seem like its part of the story. Trying on bikinis, buying a fancy dress or just peeking. I agree its not very original but I still enjoy it.
