Why no one picks up abandoned AVNs?

Typically the people with the skills to do it (if they managed to get the assets) would rather just tell their own story

Translators won't pick up stories partially translated by another translator, or at least that used to be the case when I used to read translated novels. The reason given was that it wasn't their project or work and it can be hard to replicate the last translators style.
VNs need a lot more work than translations, you'll need to write the story and make the art, that's after getting permission from the original dev. who could change their mind, all this work and the project isn't even really yours. You updates will also get compared to the original work, which to some will never be good enough even if its objectively better.
I say all this despite really wanting some games to be continued.

To all the previous points I think we can add that a lot of AVNs probably contain copyright violations of some kind or another. E.g. using an asset such as a model or a piece of clothing or an item from some collection that is free for completely non-commercial use but not for projects that try to raise money on Patreon. Taking over someone else's project means that you will be responsible for all mistakes of this kind that the previous developer made. At least enough so that you might become involved in an expensive court case.

I don't think it's correct, I think he's doing something illegal by collecting a work that is not his, imagine that dev publishes again and that day he finds out that someone took his work without authorization.
If you have authorization it would be another matter.
It is not something that translates and anyone can take it since a translator abandoned it

Personally i feel that it's pointless to pick up abandoned AVNs, to really continue with abandoned game you would need more than just the assets. You'd need extensive notes on where the plot was heading and how characters were going to be evolved. Basically if someone else tried to continue abandoned AVN, pretty fast there would be clash of styles/writing that would lead to disappointment. Instead of trying to continue abandoned AVN it's best to start new AVN and use the abandoned AVN as inspiration. That way it's something that really looks the way of the dev from the start.

I have to agree with the others. It's just not feasable enough and there is generally to much risk involved to take up abandoned games. I also considered taking up abondoned titles at one point, but its a high risk and low reward situation, and should only be considered if the passion for the game is real and you have the consent of the author/dev.

Legal problems due to copyright and so on discourage most from picking up abandoned games.

Also some games are tarnished due to certain developers getting arrested. 🤷‍♂️

Is it not possible or allowed for other devs to pick up established abandoned AVNs?
Like take AoA Academy for example. The game already have an established fanbase, other devs or someone who can render and write a good story could just pick it up to continue it, or will it be considered plagiarism?
I mean they were abandoned so they should be free for others to pick up.

Also if abandoned games did get picked up by other devs will you support it?
Two reasons. One you vastly underestimate the amount of time and effort that devs put into building their games. Two, working on other peoples ideas is boring and stale. Most people would rather take the interesting concepts and start from scratch than build on top of someone elses work.

If you are talking about the second case then that already does happen. Isn't there like 2 or 3 summertime saga clones?

I mean, there are a ton of Babysitting Cream clones/forks, so it does happen if the game is popular enough, the source code is acessible enough and the assests are largely recreatable. But that's maybe also because it'd be impossible to enforce copyright over it, seeing as it exists because it ignores SEGA copyright.
