To answer the title of the thread, the games were censored before they came to this site.

That said, the games here that are censored are censored because of a law written in Japan.
And where western games are concerned, they are censored because Patreon won't let you make money from them otherwise.

Back in my day.... There were no western VNs, there were no translation sites or text hooks, or even anyone who understood the moon runes. Not only were the JPN AVN pictures censored, but the text might have well been too. We understood almost nothing save the kanji for "Mother", "Sister", "Aunt" or "Step-". And thats the way we liked it. Free to just jerk off to pixelated images of what we could only assume was some guy fucking his mother, and no one could tell us otherwise.

So yes, I play censored games. I just imagine the body parts. Still get tits and ass, so its not all bad.

Nobody censors their own game as an artistic choice. (Well, practically nobody.) When a game is censored, then that means that the alternative would be that the game is not available at all in its original market. It's primarily a Japanese problem.

Since Japan is very permissive with regard to pornography in many respects other than the required censorship, translated versions may even get additional censorship to make them legal in all target markets, or to make Steam accept them.
