Not counting the slop you'd find on Ebaums and NG back in the day, it was this Japanese VN. I really dug the art for it, but holy shiet was it depressing. It was one of those Drakengard deals where you thought the further you went, the better the ending, but nah, it just got worse and worse. That said, CoC was a good palate cleanser.

Its been a while, but I THINK it was some early Japanese visual novel-ish game. Seasons of Sakura, Paradise Heights, Runaway City, something along those lines.
