Where did this review format come from and am I alone in thinking it's kind of silly?

I'm talking about this:

Writing: 2
Art Quality: 5
Personal Opinion:1

I see this over and over in various game reviews and am wondering how it became the de facto standard here. Aren't the writing and art quality scores already personal opinions? Is there really nothing other than "writing" and "art" worth scoring? More importantly, how do those scores translate to a star rating? I've seen reviews with scores that averaged 3 end up with 4 stars, for example.

It just seems overly simple, misused, and yet redundant at the same time.

Help me understand, please!

What you gave as an example is not a review. It is simply someone's opinion, and a very categorical one at that, lacking any argumentation. A review implies a detailed, reasoned analysis of each point. From time to time, I publish reviews on another site, and working on a review takes a lot of time—from an hour to two.

A review should analyze the plot of the game/VN, its strengths and weaknesses.
The depth of character development should be evaluated.
Immersiveness is assessed based on the first two points.
Next, we can talk about gameplay and game mechanics.
Graphics. For me, it is of secondary importance (unless it is Japanese and pixel graphics, which I ignore), so I evaluate it towards the end of the review.
And finally - summa summarum, an assessment of the game as a whole. In conclusion, you can write who will like this game and who should stay away from it.
This results in a fairly long text in which all the pros and cons of the project under consideration should be evaluated.
It is on the basis of all of the above that I argue that the example you gave cannot be called a review, even with a great deal of effort.
Personally, I choose games mainly based on detailed reviews, not previews in the form of pictures.
I've only been here for three days, I haven't figured everything out yet, and I simply don't know what form game reviews take here.

Bravo saves me from reading walls of opinionated crap....just kidding but man go to F-95 and read those reviews.

At least you don't get modded here when games get negative reviews to fix the game score for a developer.

Also the great Anti NTR or Pro NTR campign on that site.

I have 21 reviews on the site you mentioned. Ten of them give extremely negative ratings to the games in question (1-2 points out of 5). There are three positive reviews (4-5 out of 5). The rest (eight) are in the “so-so” category (3 out of 5). Over many years (I registered there in May 2019), none of my reviews have been deleted or edited by the moderators. Yes, they are long texts, but I grew up in an era when people still knew how to read (and read very voluminous books without pictures).

I understand that clip thinking prevails now, so the simple phrase “this game is crap” is already enough for a full review.

Well you obviously can't detect sarcasm with a little bit of opinion and fact.

Oh and yes that forum does delete reviews on certain threads.

Bottom-line I don't even bother to read reviews or care about them on any forum.

I just love the drama my good man or madam.

You'll find many don't like that site around these parts.

I mean, that is because LC has a tiny fraction of the activity that ef 9 5 has.

The most popular game on LC has 75 reviews... Being a Dik on ef 95 has over 1700 reviews written.

I also dislike this structure of reviews.
At the end of the day a review is subjective, and while you can try to rate things in an objective way, I think its impossible (and the reason why you can see a bunch of reviews listing multiple bad points in a game just to still give it 5*).
So I MUCH prefer the reviews that try to accurately (and reasonably objectively) describe parts of the game, while summing it up at the end as the whole experience, with the subjective experience and score of the reviewer.
At the end of the day - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Dude... the zone even shdowbans devs when they try to manipulate that score...

I like it when reviews evaluate aspects of a game .. writing, art, lewds, character development, choices matter, and so on .. even if just number ratings.
And I like when they go in depth on what they consider notable factors in there assessment of the quality of the game.

It is helpful when they discuss the quality of things that are not common to all games .. such as "the fetishes are vanilla but written well", "the choices really matter resulting in very different paths", "the lewd scenes feel thrown in and get repetitive", "the story really got me feeling for the characters", and so on.
