Whats a sequel to a game that you loved that couldn't live up to the original

I think the last of us 2 was so much less enjoyable than the first, putting you in control of a completely unsympathetic character who *spoilers* brutally murders the main character from the first game in front of their brother and surrogate daughter *end spoilers* that immediately turned me off from the idea of taking over the role of that new character. I had no desire to continue on but did and surprisingly it didn't get any better from there. I know a lot of people like or love the second game but I couldn't really get into it at all.

This +10. The irony is that without that part, I'm pretty sure I'd have loved the sequel more than the original. Ellie is awesome. But adding the Abbie part completely ruined the pacing and she was a horrible playing character.

I wished and pined for andromeda to be good but even I had to admit it just wasn’t a finished game when it was released

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I actually loved Andromeda. Did it have some issues - sure; could it have used more development time before release - unquestionably; but was it a bad game overall - no. It was just a combination of unrealistically high expectations and a premature release that give it such a bad rep.

I enjoyed Andromeda but that krogan fistfight may be one of the worst cut-scenes i've ever had the displeasure of seeing

Easily borderlands 3 , the streamer bad guys plotline was god awful. It was like they forgot everything that made the second game good.

I bought Andromeda when it was cheap on sale and still haven't played is it worth giving it a go with mods?

As someone who wasn't a massive ME fan. I thought andromeda was eaily on par with some of the trilogy. It had alot more bugs/crashes at launch which didn't help. But overall it was a decent to good game easily on par with ME1 and parts of 2/3.

alright then I'll have to check it out next time I'm feeling like spending some time on a singleplayer game

Resident Evil 4-6
I like except QTE, but there are so many QTE that I hate it.

Porn: Lots. But Babysitters, Lab Rats 2 and NLT's new game come to mind. It's mostly coz of Patreon crackdowns so the sequels are watered down with vanilla content.

Normal games: Too many to mention. Quake 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Prototype 2, Watch Dogs 2, Spiderman 2 (just coz fuck Miles Morales), some of the games mentioned above like Andromeda and Resident Evil 4-6 etc. I mean they aren't bad games (except Andromeda and Re4 and 6) but the previous games are way better. Will use BG3 as an example as it's so popular. The whole main plot of BG3 was basically a hidden side quest in BG2 and your max level in BG3 was like your early power level in BG2. Pretty underwhelming, and the turn based combat sucks ass and is a huge step down from previous games. I won't even get started on RE4.

And then some sequels stay consistent or even improve on the original such as God of War: Ragnarok, the Bayonetta games, Baldur's Gate 2, Mass Effect 2 (Still on the fence on this 1 because 1 and 2 were both unique and works of art on their own), every Tomb Raider game, Half Life 2, Arkham City etc

Chrono cross, cities SL 2, kerbal SP 2, OW 2. <- all of these where let downs.

Skyrim. I mean, Morrowind was a freaking masterpiece, Oblivion at least had meme value to make up for the bits that fell short of Morrowind. Skyrim is just so watered down for casual play that there isn't anything to keep you hooked. And don't get me started on combat and the ridiculous enemy scaling. It's like they decided to keep all the bad parts of Oblivion and throw the rest out.

Then there is Crusader Kings 3. CK2 was the perfect mixture of chaos and order, of taking it serious and yet still being playful. Playing CK2 is like barreling down a steep icy hill, trying not to hit anything and keep in control as the car keeps sliding left and right. Then came the release of CK3 and it felt like I was on rails. Not being railroaded by some narrative, so maybe that metaphor is wrong, but I will still use it. I set out a plan of action for the next decades and everything went exactly as planned as I went through the motions. My ruler aged gracefully, passed the kingdom on to a great heir and I wondered where all the excitement had gone. Where is the random bad traits that just pop up and ruin your character? Where is the random sickness and other tragedies that randomly befall you and ruin or delay your plans? Where is the great opportunity that randomly pops up, allowing you to aim for even greater heights than you originally aimed for? I tried getting into CK3 and I just can't.

Question on the topic: Does it count if the sequel is so bad I didn't even try playing it? I feel that way about the Stronghold series.

Slightly more controlversial opinion: I really loved Broodwar but I just couldn't get into Starcraft 2. Something about the way the engine makes everything clump together just feels bad. Broodwar had defense in depth and holding multiple strategic key points, SC2 is just two blobs of units stacking up and shuffling around for positioning.

I remember liking Costume Quest a lot, but was very let down by the sequel. Costume Quest 2 just wasn't as good as the first one.

company of heroes 3, homeworld 3, Mass effect andromeda ( as others have mentioned) oh and that shitty sequel to snowrunner, expeditions i think it was called. terrible

The harry potter parody, I think it is AOA or something like that. The first season was good, but the rest are bad.

No More Room In Hell 2. game was a complete 180 from the original, they removed many elements that made no more room in hell special and just turned it into an average mid zombie extraction game

One example of a sequel that didn’t quite live up to the original is Mirror's Edge Catalyst. The original Mirror's Edge was a beloved, innovative first-person platformer known for its fluid parkour mechanics and minimalist art style. Catalyst, while ambitious, took a more open-world approach and added combat elements, which some fans felt detracted from the pure parkour experience. The story also didn’t resonate as strongly as the original, and the new direction seemed to lose some of the unique charm and intensity of the first game. Despite improvements in graphics and scale, many felt it couldn't capture the same magic that made the original so special.

DMD was the worst one for me. I really hated how the dev made the main LI a whore.
