for sure prefer Ren'py games but sometimes kicking back with a controller and playing a adventure porn game like harem collector on RPG Maker is great

RenPy is the best. Most RPGM games are bad filler but they can be fun if done right. HTML works okay for real porn games.

Ren'Py is my go to for AVNs. But if a title is good enuff I'll play on Unity, Unreal, even Tyranno.

Ren'Py seems to be my default but it really comes down to how the dev uses the engine. I've played some really good games made with engines I thought were not suitable for the gameplay and some very bad ones made with engines specifically designed for a type of game. What I like about Ren'Py is the fact that (if not disabled by the dev) I can make the text instant, disable transitions and, if I so choose, skip unread text.

But as said, engine doesn't matter that much if the game has good writing, interesting plot, pacing and in the case of sandbox games the sandbox is made to serve the plot instead of acting as filler to pad out the game.

I prefer Ren'Py too. I've tried and liked games running on other engines, but I still find Ren'Py is the best for this kind of stuff

I usually prefer Ren'py, but I dont mind using Unity from time to time. Also not sure if it applies to this thread or not? But I also prefer DAZ as the visual engine/style as well.

I've found that i mostly play ren'py games these days. I guess that its mostly due to me predominantly playing vn with the occasional sandbox game thrown in and i find that ren'py really does all i want it to do i this regard.
Unity i dont really mind but it feels more clunky that ren'py for some reason so often down prioritize them in my backlog.
RPGM games just don't do much for me at all with the mechanics they usually contain, usually play non lewd games to scratch the rpg itch.
HTML games are very hit or miss, with most being miss thus leading to me rarely trying them anymore. That they are often real pron doesnt really help.

On the rendering side i vastly prefer DAZ to any of the other programs. With koikatsu and hs having obvious visual and scene limitations. On the rising tide of AI art im one of those that thinks this can be amazing for the future of lewd gaming.

I consider Unreal Engine games mostly as a borderline scam.
99% of the time whenever I see a game being made in unreal engine, what comes in mind is:
Unoptimized running simulator with no quest markers, no proper guidence. Bloated with running around and extremely boring scenes that lack story.
Combined with fact that some unreal engine games like Wild life are borderline money milking schemes. Wilf life existed for years and when you launch the story mode, it's still AFTER SO MANY YEARS an unfinished mess.
No, bro. I will not try your "sandbox mode". I don't want a sandbox to fuck around. I'd like a complete experience for a game that you're supposedly trying to get support for.

Part of the reason why my go-to engine is ren'py. Projects often times tend to be more interesting, more focused around story and actually make progress.

This feels more like, a game made by a dev who made it good in spite of a poor engine choice.

Watching devs try to force renpy on their strategy or management game, or watching a dev try to make unity look just like renpy really reminds me how stubborn some people can be.

That being said, Renpy is the best suited to most VNs, in that it is a VN engine, but if you want to do a different kind of game, it's probably best to use an engine better suited to that, as renpy's ability to do different genres is severely limited.

It depends. A good creator that deliberately chose an engine can normally make it work (except maybe that awful Tyranobuilder one).

However, I do tend to avoid RPGM from western games. They're often too slow and not really making use of the RPGMaker features enough to justify it over Ren'py.
At least a terrible Ren'py game I can always skip through.

For just default VN, i like Renpy, i have seen so many games that use all kinds of random ass software, only for it to be missing crucial features, or having to use random as annyoing workarounds for baseline stuff that Renpy has.

renpy is easy, it "just works", I'm working with unity and its much more powerful but you need to code it right with most things that renpy already have out of the box.

renpy for the most VN's, fast and easy access + can be easily adjusted when some smaller inconveniences appear (quick text-box mod, etc.)
unity for some okay 3d experience
for high fidelity graphics its unreal engine

definitely renpy because of the possibility of saving at every moment, unity and rpgm fail in this, not to mention that renpy has most of the best and most famous games, and it is much easier to make modifications

I know people shit on RPGM but when done right (not too common) it's 100x the best. Gives you a visual of open-world yet again if done right really makes you WANT to interact with everything.

Most of OneOne1 games are my idea of a perfect game
