A new important update has been posted covering the Donation Rewards bug, the reset of incorrect Donation and Platinum credits, the upcoming reclaim system for previous tracked donations, and the new Vault freeze/maintenance behavior. The goal is to remove bug-generated credits, protect real donation history, and rebuild the system in a cleaner and safer way going forward. - Jack Of Blades

Thoughts on VN vs. Sandbox

Prefer sandbox over VN only if a walkthrough guide is available.

If sandbox is just used to give you freedom where to go and what to do, then it is good. If it is connected to grinding and you have to gain pointless stats to progress in the game, then the dev can have all the sand from that box for themselves, for all I care.

I like VN better only because most sandboxes just make the experience worse. I don't mind sandbox when it's done well, letting you pick what content and stories to pursue, but most of them only give the illusion they're doing that and would be better served as a linear story that they end up forcing anyway.

I'd say if the story isn't really the game's strong point, or the focus, then sandbox might be a good approach. I imagine the coding being hard to track and maintain; and a little messier than a typical story-driven, straight-forward VN.

Sandbox is great if you have more than one LI, and want to give the player the ability to just focus on the one they're interested in. Sometimes I just have zero interest in half the characters, or even the story, and wish it was sandboxed/free roam. My CTRL key probably gets more action than my WASD keys.

In Summary: If the story stinks, and it can be done well, I prefer sandbox. If it's story-focused and the story hits, I prefer VN.

For me sandbox is usually a nogo in games. I have found it really kills the pace of games as it feels like a new episode of a kids cartoon.
Like there is no reference to anything else other than what you are doing at that moment and it just feel off

Sandbox games can be good but they rely on devs avoiding two very large pitfalls;

1) THE GRIND
2) Disjointed progression

If I can't progress because I still need to go back and forth to my repetitive job to earn more money 20 more times (even worse if there's a minigame tied to it) or because I didn't speak to character A first on the other side of the map who needs an item from character B (that I still need to buy from character C, facilitating yet more grinding) with no indication that any of this was ever going to be necessary, then I'm out.

Sandbox games suck absolute ass to me. Not only does developing the sandbox aspect suck up precious dev time that isn't spent on either story or porn, it's just 100% a chore to play through. Even games that don't involve grinding stats (the worst of the worst), it just fucking sucks having to click on doors and shit to get the story going. I will never understand people who say they prefer sandbox. Who plays porn games to click on doors??

There's very very few sandbox games that I even give the time of day to try, first off they have to have a very high rating AND I'm way more picky with the tags being along my preferences than when I look at VN games. And out of all the ones I've tried, only a handful of sandbox games were worth playing AND EVEN THEN the sandbox portion of them were still dragging the game down and it would have been better as a VN.

I'm 100% sure there doesn't exist a single sandbox game that wouldn't be better as a VN.

I'd rather have the interactive world of a sandbox over a VN, my ADHD having-ass can't read that much text

(There have been exceptions, however)

I rarely go the sandbox route. Burnt too many times by the ridiculous grind. There are some good sandbox games out there but even they require a time investment I often can't afford. So a nice well-written VN with interesting choices is usually the path for me.

I dislike most VN's because they are mostly interactive comics with a few meaningless choices put in.

I love the VN format, as to sandbox It depend, some sandbox games are hard or boring to grind and also some Of them are too repetitive

All things being equal, I'd choose a well-made sandbox over a well-made VN. Maybe it's my imagination, but I feel like I'm starting to see the same "actors" in multiple VNs. Busty blonde sister, blue-haired teen with half her head shaved, girl with weird bangs. And also, I wouldn't play Call of Duty if it was all story and no sandbox. I'd find it boring after a while. VNs have varying levels of available choice and those with lots of branches can be pretty fun. I'd like VNs more if they made their stories a little more plausible. I don't believe that my niece whom I haven't seen in ten years has spent all that time dreaming of the next time we meet so she can convince me to fuck her, and then she walks around town with a gaping camel toe and her tits hanging half out. And if I know my VNs, we are DEFINITELY going to end up in a dressing room at some point where the lady shopkeeper will catch us, but be cool with it. lol

I prefer VN, I'd try sandbox only for games made with unity or unreal. Are there any proper fleshed out open world type games on here?

For me longer sandbox games can feel grindy where a VN can develop a story. No use in a badly written VN though so I guess it depends on the dev(s)

If the game has a good story and well designed characters I don´t care if its VN or sandbox.

I enjoy the pantomime putting in the work which I get from sandbox games. I think they often give me a greater feeling of agency which I appreciate.

I usually prefer VN's but ive played some great sandbox games with good stories and minimal grinding so i'm a bit on the fence of which is better. I guess Vn's if I had to choose

For me, visual novels shine because they offer what I actually care about: story, characters, and payoff that feels earned. I enjoy games where you actually get to know the characters, build some kind of connection (even if it’s purely narrative), and then watch how your decisions shape where things go. I don’t need 10 hours of stat grinding or clicking through the same menu loops to unlock one scene—I just want good pacing and meaningful choices.

That said, I do like it when VNs borrow just a bit from RPGs or sandboxes—stuff like simple relationship tracking, or letting you explore different paths based on how you play. As long as it doesn’t get in the way of the story, that stuff can actually enhance the experience.
