Sound on. Both music and sound effects low, but still quite audible. I like an ambience.
Sound effects might be increased or lowered further depending how they're handled.
If there is moaning of any kind, then sound off.

Sound On. It's unfortunate that most Renpy games don't utilize sound/music. Also as a player you don't realize how much the sound effects the mood until you stumble upon a good game with sound. In my case it was "Red Lucy", really loved the acoustic covers that are used for BGM there.

I usually play with sound on if the developer have put in some amount of effort. If its just generic copyright free music I'll turn it off.

i dont turn it off, but i do slide the sound down super low to make it even more of an unobtrusive background experience

Most of the noise in vn's is distracting to the story. It's not like we're watching a movie.
That said if a vn has voiced scenes then of course on... but they're rare.
Idol Island is one with voiced but the shim and grind puts me off that game.

Sound on low for me. Adds immersion and BG music usually isn't too offensive.

Turning off the sound is one of the first things I do unless I have the house fully to myself. Usually I just like listening to Spotify over whatever music is in the game. I feel bad for the devs that put a lot of effort into the sound/music of their game only for people like myself to just mute it all.
