Story makes the game enjoyable, and keeos me interested. there is plenty of porn of all kinds out there. Vn's do have realky good sex scenes, but without a good story, then why didn't the creator just make a porn animation and be done with it?

And while the first time is obviously a very important scene and should be a blast, further interactions are also important to keep the emotional investment in the story alive. If the relationship doesn't evolve, in gets boring too.

You can focus on story is you're really really REALLY good at writing. So you have to make a reality check, are you at the level of a novel writer?
In AVN, most people want to get entertained and sexually excited, we don't look for literary masterpieces. You should always keep the player a bit aroused. So you should dose sexual content in a way that the player is not left without anything exciting for many minutes. The VN start is where people decide if to continue playing or abandon your VN, so you have to give them a taste of what they'll see in the following updates in terms of eroticism and sex. If you keep going on without sex scenes for a lot, you must be really skilled in the teasing and erotica aspect. Otherwise your VN will feel boring. There are better readings than AVN, let's be honest.

One should not beat out the other. You can have a healthy balance of sex and story going. Hell, you can deliver story exposition WHILE showing people having sex.

That said, if the story is shit I will stop playing - no matter how much sex there is in the game.
I will also stop playing if there is too much time between sex.
Basically, if there has been a full hour since I last saw some boob or pussy then I start to get bored.
If two hours have passed since there was even a hint at sex, even just some foreplay, then I get frustrated.
If three hours have passed since someone got creampied I quit and never play again.

This is a more complicated question I feel. Images draw me in to look, description determines if I download.
I have a preference of story over sex, but the two are not exclusive.

I think alot of devs get this one wrong. The answer is - as you said - both. But heres the thing. It needs to be both AT THE SAME TIME.

This is key, there's no reason that you can't have plot in your sex scenes. The sex shouldn't be meaningless to the characters, because then it will be meaningless to the reader. But if it has impact, if the characters come away from a sex scene with new perspectives, and it enriches their life (or even if it leads to drama) it's more worthwhile to me.

I hate that "just a dream" shit.

And this is another issue; I do not like a lack of consequence. Having spicy dreams is fine, but it shouldn't be swept under the rug. Have the MC talk about it to someone, or have it impact a choice the MC makes later (MC, not Player)

I have actually done something like that. There's a character at the beginning of the story that the MC could have sex with pretty quickly. This character is a bit of a throwaway character but I do have the option of bringing her back later down the line.
I've just given the MC a part-time job too, there will be a few more throw-away characters here that the player can choose to interact with or not without affecting the main story but gives the option of quick sex scenes.

I will say this is probably ok. Like, having spicy scenes early is important for retention. But it can be perhaps a previous connection, someone established as already close perhaps.
But here's something I want to add for the "throwaway" characters. Maybe make them optional?
Some people want early sex, or frequent sex. Some people don't. If it's a choice you can make, then both parties can be happy.
I know it sucks when not all of your content is viewed by everyone, but if you're seeking to cast a wide audience net, and not be generic, you might have to accept that not everyone will absorb 100% of your content. Just make sure the content that is there to be absorbed is entertaining, and I suspect your work will do great.

Just a heads up, it's incest based in case that's not your thing.

And a side note, a ton of people like incest; so you're not going to be without any readers. If it's key to your story, then awesome. If not, you could always make that a choice the player can make too.

Story first, it's how I get invested in a game. Then the sex scenes of course!. I actually fast-clicked a few sex scenes to get back to the story in long games like Long Road Home (got it a few days ago, so new for me, I have a lot to catching up to).

First post, long time on/off lurker.
I've been messing with Daz and Renpy for a while now and decided to try making my own VN.
It was going ok, learning a lot but my first attempt quickly turned into a fuck-fest with almost every scene ending up with the MC
having sex, which is fine but the story was minimal at best, made little sense and was all over the place...Ok, lesson learned, start over.

Now I've come up with a decent story, but there isn't a lot of sex scenes during the first few days as I try to establish the characters and move the story along at a decent pace. So I've gone from one extreme to the other...which brings me to my question..

Which is more important? A decent story or lot's of sex?
Another question I have is once you, as the MC, have had sex with a character are you still interested in having further sexual interactions with that character? or is it all about the first time?

I get that everyone will have their own preferences, just curious what the majority thinks.

The narrative is crucial, especially if you're aiming for something more than just a quick adult game. It's completely acceptable for the sexual content to unfold gradually, provided there is some form of sexual tension building along the way. Just ensure that people don't have to wait until the 4th chapter to experience that excitement.
