Restart from scratch or from a save?

mostly just going from the last save unless something changed that prevents me from using that save.

Restart from scratch if it has been a long time since the last update, but then will skip through what played before just to remind me of the story and then resume normal play once into new material (use save I made at end of last update to know when new material starts). Otherwise I load the save I made before the end of the last update and continue from there.

If the game is good and I don't remember the plot, play from scratch. Otherwise use a save or ctrl to where you left off.

I hate restarting incomplete games and dropped some when the savegames couldnt be loaded anymore.
Once completed i replay the good ones but i absolutely hate losing my progress midgame, no matter the reason.

depends on the game and the dev's update. i mostly go for continuation but will have to restart from time to time when its needed, e.g: the update messes with saves, recap on the story or to review the scenes.

I always start from a save unless there is a reason not to, like saves are broken by the new release.

Starting from scratch is better if you have zero recollection of whatever such game was about.
It's basically a new game at this point, and "new game" is picked when playing, well, a new game.

I do the same thing if I cannot remember. It's way better, since you can enjoy the game again!

Depends on the game.If it is a frindy game Ill quit otherwise ill skip till the point i lost my save

Edit: I drunk, sorry for th e misspellings

Some games i already restarted 4times or so because i forgot where i left off (especially if i missed a update or 2)
:^)

I don't have much time, so I try to make maximum use of my saves. When I have the option, creating a save every time.

Only those games that updates once or twice a year I try to restart from scratch

I agree. It depends mostly on the time between updates. A few weeks to months save is fine, but once a year or every 18 months, then I need a restart. I play way to many VNs to remember.

Yeah, it depends as most here have said.

For a VN, a save every time. I can usually remember everything even if it has been a year since an update. If there is a sandbox lewd game that can't work from a save, I usually just drop it. Can't be bothered with the point anymore.

For sandbox video games, I usually will start a new game with new goals in mind (Minecraft, Factorio, civilization); but for games with an ending (Dragon Age, Witcher) I will play from a save until I finish it. Then, if I still want to play, then start all over.

Always try to use saves. Unless...
I've recently learnt that walkthrough mods make the saves unusable if the next game version is not using the updated mod also. That means that for a huge sandbox like "Harem Hotel", for which Lain's Mod has been abandoned, I just have tons of useless savefiles.
Yeah... I'm not replaying a sandbox ever. Even less one of the size of "Harem Hotel". Maybe when it is finished... A pity, because otherwise it's a fantastic game.

I understand this quite well. My rule of thumb is generally, 6 months. I'm really not the type to constantly watch a game and play each update as it comes out, unless it has truly got my attention.

If it's been over 6 months since I last played it, I will delete all my saves, including "persistent" for Renpy, and start fresh.

It depends on how long was the last time that i played that game

I usually restart to refresh my memory, but I skip some scenes.

From a save. That's the point of a save. Definitely don't want to go through everything again, especially since the early parts are usually boring.
