I have to agree that Light of my Life has quite the engaging story, but it's so long and grindy I can barely keep up with it! I don't know if you had a similar experience, also, it has too many side characters don't really care about and derive the focus of the main story.
Radiant is more of my pace. Such a good game!

Yeah, I also feel like if I started DMD now, after all the other games I've played, I don't think I'd have been able to sit through the opening parts without skipping ahead. I was a lot more patient before I realised quite the volume of games around.

There are surprisingly quite a few: Mist, Once in a Lifetime, Ripples, Black Souls I and II, Melody, the NLT Media trilogy.
These are the ones that popped into my head, in no particular order.

Playing Shale Hill Secrets at the moment. I would consider it the only adult game where I'm legitimately there for the story. The sex scenes are not bad, particularly because the character are well written, but I've actually skimmed through a couple to get back to the plot.

Oh, and then there's Haley's Story, which uh...the story definitely took over that one. Not in a good way, but not in a bad way either. Shit just got too real for me.

Monster girl quest is literally a game where every lost battle results in the reverse rape of our protagonist shota, but as you progress through the story you see that it has an incredible plot and several great and well-developed characters.

Black souls for me, one of the best indepth stories i've ever played

Lots of japanese visual novels and rpgmaker games.
If I had to choose western ones I'd say Katawa Shoujo and more recently Superhuman.

Cosy Cafe was the first one in a long time where the story grabbed my attention. Before that, like many others, Mist and to a lesser degree Harem Hotel. In the beginning I didn't skip anything in HH but some of the longer storylines had me skimming.
