I agree with this, but I think it's more complicated for the direction the kink grows in. I think most of the extreme fetishes are rooted in something that usually doesn't have a sexual component for most people but gets tied to gratification for those with the fetish. I see "scat" come up a lot in these posts, so I'll use it as an example. Past trauma or exposure, a need to feel "dirty" because sexual gratification is considered "dirty", the desire to see others degraded, the desire to BE degraded, and other factors may all contribute to why someone might become aroused at defecation or the actions and materials associated with it. "Dopamine is a hell of a drug" is spot on. Many don't seem to realize that those that use drugs don't feel good from the drugs, but from the chemicals the body produces in result of using those drugs. If your endocrine system's reaction gets tied to something while spewing out endorphins, dopamine, oxytocin, or whatever you will be strongly motivated to seek out and engage in behaviours that get that response again. Toss in the usual mix of conditioning and reinforcement of behaviours and you get your personalized slippery-sloped express lane to Downtown Perv-Town.
