I've never understood why so many people go ballistic over NTR.

Do that many people think they're actually the character in the story, and feel they're literally getting cheated on or something?

It's just an extension of that thing people feel when watching a show or reading a book and a character dies to an enemy's blade. This time the blade is more metaphorical, as is the death.
