It's been on mind for a while that SFXs for games can be quite uninspired and lazy. I know RPG Maker games are one of the best examples of this. It doesn't have to be that way either when you accessible tools and instruments on the cheap, there's even FOSS DAWs such as LMMS available as well. An musical instrument does not have to be solely for a BGMs or music making. You can pluck a lyre string or thumb a key from a thumb piano to create an original sound for your game. You don't need a fancy expensive instrument for sound is what I'm getting at. You have thumb pianos for under $15, Lyre harps under $38, a Stylophone for $40, and now a pocket synthesizer for under $70. A ukulele is another inexpensive instrument you can add to your collection, one that I can vouch for it's fun factor. I'm sure there's other very inexpensive instruments too that you can use to your advantage as well.
In my recent research for a game idea, I started doing more research and learning on the 1980s, which lead to me looking into New Wave music. From there I came across the world Synthesizers. I was looking at digital and analog synthesizers for some days. Then I started going down to budget options, which is how I finally came across the M Vave FM-1. This budget pocket synth labeled as the $60 dollar synth, and a price value game changer for synthesizers according to others. Right now this synth is blowing up with a plethora of custom firmware to get the most out of it. I own one now and I am still playing around with it for future games.
Right now there are far more than 10 custom firmwares to expand your experience with the FM-1. Recently, The Baud Gurl firmware has an update that adds chiptunes. The Ghoul Box is one I have not tried out but is on my mind for making some RPG releated game SFXs.
Custom Firmwares for the FM-1:
BaudGirl, the OG custom firmware that kicked off the custom firmware crave for this synth:
Ghoul Box:
P.S I might make a separate thread for Synths. Seeing how the FM-1 is a bulk of it.
I would like to see input from others as well, even if you're not a game developer.
