I much prefer lighter happier themes. Dark and violence can be part of the back story but if it becomes a major part of the story progression I'll probably move on to the next game.
Maybe a little bit is OK if it's written well but most of the time it's just a writer trying too hard to be edgy and it comes off as corny. What I really prefer is seeing good things happen to good characters.
I like dark games corrupting and mind breaking etc. I'm not a fan of bondage though nor anything to do with mutilation, I cant run faster from that type of stuff.
In general, not that dark to not dark at all. Enough to fit the story/setting, but not full grimdark and depression for no reason.
But if I am specifically looking for a dark game, then I like it to be quite dark. But I want it to take itself reasonably seriously and not be too over the top (or at least let me know early on or in the description/promotional material how serious/unserious it will be). If I'm looking for something over the top then that's what I want, but if it started out reasonably realistic I'd prefer it stays that way.
A lot depends on the genre and what I knew I was getting myself into. I don't want it to suddenly change for no reason. I'm fine with it if it makes sense narratively and was done well. But surprise tonal shifts are hard.
I can tolerate a darker side story, but overall I prefer my games with a lighter tone. I just feel bad about seeing those lovely renders cry and be in pain.
I've learned a bit about myself while playing these games. I delve deeper into dark stories than I ever thought I would, but I'm still pretty reserved. There are some lines I haven't crossed like torture or slavery and some I have like light humiliation and sleep grape. But I'm a work in progress so who knows how I'd answer this question a year from now.
I do enjoy dark stories, but not all the time—it really depends on my mood. When I'm in the right mindset, though, it’s fascinating to see how dark things can get. There’s something about exploring the darker sides of a story that makes it feel more intense and engaging, but it’s definitely something I need to be in the mood for. Sometimes, a lighter or more balanced story works better for me
I say this as someone who can enjoy extremely dark stuff....MY main problem with DARK stories is that they tend to be poorly written:
In that the MC isn't just dark, they're killing puppies and throwing babies into volcanoes. There's very little nuance to them, it's just like some setting is flipped and mc does every evil thing you can think of and that can take me out of it because it becomes silly.
Also a fan of darker games, From what ive played, blackheart indeed does have the best of everything, story not bad, scenarios are good(and messed up), and makes me never feel bored playing them
I like dark games in the sense that dark games have corruption, blackmail, or the Protaganist goes from neutral to dominant either through blackmail. corruption or sadism
I like playing both Female protag and Male protag
An example of what I like is Karlssons Gambit , Jezebel, River Of Astrum, Sin Heels and By Justice or Mercy.
