How big of a harem is too big?

Only males need a limit for a harem...lesbians and fictional male protagonists can be always ready for a large amount of girls, but real guys are useless for multiple girls ^^

For me, an example of complete absurdity is Reunion. 1 man and 30+ women. I couldn't remember their names.
 
4-5 I think is the limit any more and you have a village not a harem
 
Really big ones can be fun, like anything in the double digits, but they tend to not be as well done as the ones with smaller and more manageable amounts. Plus they seem to end up in the abandoned bin a lot too
 
Too big is when you lose contact with the story and / or there is too few content with every member of the harem...
 
I'd say once you reach more than three so one in each arm and on on your lap as constant companions though two might actually be better. But let's be honest this is just about getting laid so there is no limit.
 
There is no such thing as a harem that is big enough.

You just need variety and a developer willing to put in work for content.

Having said that yes I will agree sometimes a large harem doesn't turn out well.

The best harem number is between 4 and 10.
Anything below 4 is just a threesome.
and about 10 they just become one night stands.

Between 4 and 10 keeps it veriad enough to add spice without losing track of who is who.

After all i want a harem.
Not find, fuck, forget.
 
I think for the sake of story that keeps moving at a decent pace, having a limit is best. I think 4 is a good number to keep things going well, this is based on my current thoughts as I was just playing Bare Witness and it has a really good 4 girl (+MC) option that flowed well and played well.

Others like WVM when you have so many you may not remember all their names etc.. is an issue like others said, especially when you get to the 4 or 5 updates in and you finally see a character return to have fun and you don't remember who they are at all. I do feel in these larger Harem games though you only really have normal handful of characters that are the main members and the rest are essentially side pieces even if they are "exclusively" for the MC, which is why they'd show up so infrequently.

It would be good if there is a in game profile viewer or something to at least keep track of who they are, not many games have this though in any good capacity. Generally Sandbox does this better in that sense as usually they would build a character tracker to keep on top of all the characters, some HTML sandbox games are really on point with this when they even give you details based on where you at with their story etc.. so it is a little easier to know what you've done with them story wise. One game that has this and it is pretty decent is Cosy Cafe, the dev even has updates to it based on the story point your at albiet some work may be needed on that end to just make sure it unlocks the new info at the right time.

In general I tend to make myself a little cheat sheet with notes so I can reference that if a character I don't remember comes back up with some quick notes, this also helps for in-development games as I have a reference sheet when I get back to the game a year later or how ever long it takes me.

WVM is my go to as well for a harem being to large but i think the bigger issue with that game is that there is not really a great turn down point for any of the girls, compared to something like Terminus reach sentinel which also has a pretty big harem but you have a lot of opportunity to limit it if you so choose.

I do think that having more choices is best with a large harem so people can pick and choose who they like and what type of content they want to see assuming characters have specific kinks they like, but I do also understand each girl that has a option adds to the level of complexity and amount of writing needed and the rending needed.

I know some harem games will almost treat each path as if you are solo with them and there is no real "harem" just a bunch of girls you sleep with, I find a lot of the HTML harem games are this way, the most they might interact with each other is if they are part of the same general location, but not crossing the streams type of thing. It is one way to do it to keep the branching paths down but it does lack the feel of a Harem that would come with them all knowing and accepting it.

I do prefer when there is a real harem where the girls are aware and are good with the situation, preferably you had to earn their trust to be with others vs them just being alright with it. There generally is one girl who is the "glue" that keeps the Harem together, which would be like Jamie in WVM. There are others where they understand that the MC is sleeping with plenty of women but no one really talks about it like Grandma's House, it is clear at least based on the last update I played which is behind a few releases that some of them definitly know MC is not just with them, but no one brings it up it does not do the HTML harem games though as there was some cross group fun in the last update I played between the gingers in that.

I would say how the dev wants to approach it depends on how much work they want to get themselves. As even without doing paths of LI, if they do different paths for a date night, vacation etc essentially double of triple the work depending then also adding in different LI that were chosen amoung that would be worse, asuming they don't just cut and past the same scene with different LI and make them more unique depending on LI's chosen.
 
More than 13 is too big.

They can be co-workers, family, side family, friends, etc. So it can get quite big.
 
IMO harem is too big when i have to basically fuck everyone in order to get to one girl that was in the game from the beginning.
 
i think 10 allows for a well rounded group of personalities without compromising character development
 
I think 5-7 is around my limit.

Games that go overboard with the harem (10+) become boring due to lack of character development, lack of focus on specific characters I like, or just fizzle out as there's just too much to do.
I dont have a specific, but when it results in lack of character development it sucks. Guess it depends on how much work the dev wants to put into it.
 
In games, no limit, in real life I think 3-7 would be the point where you couldn’t keep up with everyone and their needs, as well as your own. Unless everyone is chill like that.
