They are ok, but a short part of the main story, the ones that are full new games are annoying that they tend to not be cannon, and take away time the devs could have spent on the actual game. But having said that I also understand it can be a good way to avoid burning out on the project since you can do whatever you want while keeping the events non-cannon.

The best case is that the dev has built it into the main story, the latest update is just themed around the holiday but still advances the plot. Yeah playing Christmas specials in May feels weird, but I also get the desire to step away from the current game to not get burnt out from the dev's side. The approach I prefer though is the way Family Friends And Strangers was done, where the dev made a second game that was 'scenes that didn't happen'. None of it is cannon, but allows them to make whatever they want.

The "specials" often take you out of the game, which isn't what I really like.
But incorporating Halloween scenes that fit the story well is pretty cool.

Generally not a fan of them. To me they mostly feel like a weird parallel universe to the main game, like something is off. If I really like a game, I will probably give the special a go (if released), but generally I skip them.

This. If I don't like the plot of a game, I simply won't play it. But if I do like it, the last thing I want is for it to suddenly change in a random direction.

I actually hate anything that isn't part of the main storyline, and in most VNs holiday specials absolutely fall under this. Anything where if you have a sex scene, the characters can never acknowledge that it really happened later in the main story. It's just pointless to me, I want the story to move forwards, not sideways.

It's for the same reason I hate dream sequences and in some cases even flashbacks. Some devs use it as a way to shoehorn a sex scene in their game early without having to commit to the characters having sex yet and exactly 100% of the time it feels lazy and contrived.

Of course if you rather had a new update, I have to agree to that....

The roommate had a christmas special, I didn't like it, it was too short. Those 2 girls should have done more together.

Yeh I complained about that with projekt passion (on f95), and dev said it was no problem, did it in a few hours, the renders were already there...

On paper, it should be good, but too many games just stick to blowjob scenes instead of full-on sex scenes. Plus, they usually don’t advance the story in any meaningful way.
